Whichever analyst firms’ data you refer to, all agree that the global market for EV batteries will experience a compound annual growth rate of between 25% and 30% throughout the rest of this decade. A report published by Market Research Future predicts that it will have an annual worth of over $190 billion by 2030.
The battery is the most crucial component in an EV design, as it makes all the difference in terms of the range that can be traveled between recharges and overall performance. It also contributes the most to the vehicle’s expense, as well as a large proportion of its weight. Any innovations that can increase capacity, reduce size, or lower the cost of the battery are going to prove highly advantageous to the vehicle manufacturer, providing them with the prospect to add to their market share. Consequently, new chemistry iterations and cell arrangements are being experimented with on a constant basis.
EV manufacturers, supported by their battery suppliers and system integration partners, must find ways through which they can outmaneuver their rivals. They need to develop energy storage solutions that will lengthen the distance that their EVs can travel between recharges so that car buyers are not troubled by range anxiety concerns. They also must explore design methodologies that will keep vehicles’ part costs down as much as possible, thereby making their models more attractive to car buyers and securing greater commercial uptake.
GaN Will Revolutionize Power Supplies for Home Health-Care Market
By Andrew Bryars
These days, we are increasingly receiving medical care and monitoring outside of traditional locations such as hospitals, clinics, and doctors’ offices. This alleviates the pressure on clinical spaces due to an increase in available medical procedures and an aging global population that has led to an increasing number of older people needing medical care.
Boosting Power Density in Battery-Supplied BLDC and PMSM Motor Control Applications
By Maurizio Acosta
Due to their higher efficiency, compact size, low maintenance cost, high torque-to-weight ratio, and low operating noise, among other benefits, three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) and permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are becoming the preferred choice for designing modern battery-powered motor products. The potential applications range from cordless power tools and gardening products to drones, e-bikes, and automated guided vehicles, just to name a few.
SiC Substrate Manufacturing Facility in Italy
By Maurizio Di Paolo Emilio
In order to meet the growing demand from ST’s customers for SiC devices across automotive and industrial applications, as they move toward electrification and seek higher efficiency,?STMicroelectronics?will build an integrated SiC substrate manufacturing facility in Italy. Beginning in 2023, production will enable a balanced supply of SiC substrate between internal and external sources.
A Software-Based Approach to Wireless Power Transfer Modeling
By Stefano Lovati

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a process that has been known for quite some time, dating back to the invention of the Tesla coil. Due to some valuable benefits (lack of cables and connectors, as well as high isolation between power transmitter and receiver), this technology plays a relevant role today in applications such as EV charging, phone charging, medical devices, and more.1,2?Based on the standard or on the inductive coupling process, WPT needs to achieve a high level of efficiency, minimizing the power losses.
Controlling Conducted Noise in Military-Grade DC/DC Switching Power Supplies Using Multiphase Synchronization Techniques
By Christian Jonglas
Switching DC/DC converters in military applications must meet stringent standards for limits on conducted input noise emissions, and they typically require input filter networks for compliance. However, when inputs of DC/DC converters are paralleled, noise can combine in indeterminate ways, making filter design difficult. This article discusses the issue and describes a way to achieve a consistent and substantial reduction in emissions using the phased switching-frequency synchronization technique.
