The European Commission has recently announced the winners of the prestigious 2024 Large AI Grand Challenge, highlighting four groundbreaking AI startups from Europe that are set to make significant contributions to various sectors through innovative applications of artificial intelligence. This year's competition was highly competitive, receiving 94 proposals from across Europe.

The 2024 winners of the Large AI Grand Challenge are:

1. Lingua Custodia (France): Specializing in AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) for the finance sector, Lingua Custodia aims to enhance fintech operations by developing solutions that achieve speeds five times faster than current systems.

2. Unbabel (Portugal): Combining AI and human translation, Unbabel provides multilingual support across all 24 official EU languages. This Lisbon-based company focuses on improving communication and accessibility in a multilingual continent.

3. Tilde (Latvia): Experts in language technologies, Tilde offers machine translation and AI-powered chatbots, targeting Balto-Slavic languages spoken by 155 million people within the EU and candidate countries.

4. Textgain (Belgium): An AI startup focused on enabling companies and governments to gain insights from unstructured data through predictive text analytics. Textgain addresses the analysis of hate speech, a critical area of concern with significant societal implications.

Prize and Resources

These four startups will share a total prize of €1 million and an allocation of 8 million GPU hours on two world-leading EuroHPC JU supercomputers, LUMI and LEONARDO. The awarded supercomputing time will be essential for developing their large-scale AI models over the next 12 months, reducing training times from years to weeks. The winners are expected to release their developed models under an open-source license for non-commercial use or publish their research findings.

Additional Allocation

Due to the success of the initiative, EuroHPC JU allocated additional computational time to the supercomputer MareNostrum 5, hosted by Barcelona Supercomputing Centre. An additional 800,000 computational hours will be allocated to the 5th ranked proposal from Multiverse Computing , a quantum computing startup focusing on enhancing the energy efficiency and speed of large language models.
