Europe’s Rail -Rail4Earth -Workpackage Noise & Vibration -Tonality research

When travelling on trains one grows accustomed to the typical train sounds such as an accelerating or braking train or the sound of the climate system and the converters. The similarity between these sounds is that a certain "tone" can be dominant, a frequency that is more clearly present than other frequencies this is called tonal sound. This sound can be annoying for passengers and residents.

Within Europe’s Rail ?Europe’s Rail Joint Understanding (ERJU).there is a joint European effort to study the subject of ‘Tonal Noise. NS is working in this study together with Alstom, ADIF, SNCF, ?Goudappel, Ricardo and IBV.

NS, together with Goudappel are working on the nuisance perception research for travelers. We are doing an innovative study in which we combine three research forms called ‘methodical triangulation’. Where we question travelers in the train, in a mock-up of the train and in an online environment to get a good insight into the influence of different tonalities on the traveler’s experience. The final part, the online research, is planned to be carried out this autumn and the analyses and conclusions will follow in 2025.

Tuesday we presented a subset of the preliminary findings on the Europe’s Rail Community Day at the NS headquarters in Utrecht. We also hosted a workshop, on the subject of nuisance perception of different train noises, in a mock-up of an ICM train.

Together with European partners we aim to drive innovation.

It was interesting to hear live from the "passengers" why (red) or why not (green) they are annoyed by tonal train noise.
