Europe's Final Countdown is at number one again. Final GDPR tip: Don't ask a plumber for advice on the safety of your electrics (tip 10/10).
That's it. It's all about to become real. GDPR is enforced from tomorrow.
I hope the previous 9 tips have been useful but I just have one more for you.
Don't rely on third-hand advice. Go to the experts directly.
You wouldn't get a software engineer to do the survey on a house you want to purchase, and you wouldn't ask a rocket scientist for advice on a serious health issue. You might have interesting and helpful chats with them, but although they are both highly skilled people they are experts in a different field. Instead you'd go to a chartered surveyor and a doctor for their respective advice. So don't just rely on GDPR advice from friends, acquaintances, or even my tips! In fact, don't even rely on articles from your favourite newspaper.
I have heard and read so much rubbish (see my red bus in yesterday's tip), but if you hear something enough times then you can start to believe it.
Did you know that if a space craft left Earth heading for the Sun but was just one degree off its intended trajectory when leaving our planet, then it would miss the Sun by over 1.6 million miles! You've heard the term "you were a millions miles off, mate"? Well, that's what can happen to your GDPR implementation if some bad advice takes you off course early. Consider the risks and the impact of what taking a cheap shortcut might have on your company's long-term success.
So, always get advice from legal experts, or research the relevant online resources such as the ICO's website.
That's it. My final tip. Just to say thanks for reading, I'm signing off with one of my favourite GDPR jokes and even a song:
My mate asked me if I knew of a good GDPR lawyer.
I said yes.
My mate then asked me if I could give him their number.
I said no, sorry, I'm not allowed.
And here's the GDPR song. Well, someone was always going to do it, weren't they?
Below is the list of all the other tips from this series:
Day 1 of 10 tip of the day - tell them what you want to do
Day 2 of 10 tip of the day - get their consent!
Day 3 of 10 tip of the day - existing users? Delete? Opt-out?
Day 4 of 10 tip of the day - you were probably already nearly there anyway!
Day 5 of 10 tip of the day - It isn't just Europe's countdown.
Day 6 of 10 tip of the day - Don't be greedy with what you ask. Reduce your risk and exposure.
