European vacuum conference success for UK
STFC had a big presence at the combined 17th European Vacuum Conference (EVC-17) and the 37th European Conference on Surface Science (ECOSS-37) in Harrogate recently.??
?
This combined event also included the Vacuum Symposium training courses (previously held at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory), the RGA users meeting and 44 industrial exhibitors.?
?
The European Vacuum Conference (EVC) is held every three years to discuss the latest developments in vacuum science, technology and applications.??
?
The European Conference on Surface Science (ECOSS) is an annual event that is held and co-ordinated by a joint standing committee of the International Union for Vacuum Science Technique and Applications and European Physics Society Condensed Matter Division.??
?
A successful bid saw the EVC return to the UK for the first time in 36 years, and Dr Oleg Malyshev and Joe Herbert from our ASTeC Vacuum Solutions group led on the organisation.?
?
The EVC was opened with a talk from STFC’s Professor Jim Clarke titled ‘Particle accelerators at Daresbury Laboratory: a colourful past and a bright future’.??

The five-day conference programme included six plenary sessions, each followed by a number of parallel sessions, plus poster sessions, a range of training courses and even activities specifically for early career researchers.?
?
STFC colleagues delivered a variety of talks and posters highlighting the great work we do in across facilities and research. We were also represented in the exhibition zone where colleagues from ASTeC and BID were on hand to answer questions about the facilities and services we offer to the research community and to small businesses.??
?
The ASTeC Vacuum Solutions Group and admin team played a huge role behind the scenes keeping the programme running and supporting all aspects of the conference. The conference would not have been such a success without the team support, so a huge thank you to everyone involved.???
