The European Super League. Was Florentino Perez right?
During our Easter (Orthodox) celebrations I asked my nephew if he had watched "Sunderland 'Til I Die" on Netflix. His response was, "watched a bit, didn't like it, I follow Liverpool". I explained to him that Sunderland AFC are a big club in the north east of England, one that represents a very working class city whose mood swings with the travails of the club. They have won six First Division titles and two FA Cups and stand sixth in overall championships. He had not interest in all of this, the history didn't appeal. The romanticsim of the game was left to the "legacy" supporters.
During the recent European Super League fiasco, the Real Madrid President made the point that the current generation of football fan can only watch the game in very small chunks and only follow the famous teams. What would they do, if their team was relegated and spent years in the wilderness say like Leeds United. Would they dump them and move to the next succesful club? Don't know, however, I can say with some certainty that I doubt that many of my nephews generation would follow the likes of Sunderland, Sheffield United or Blackpool.
I would appreciate any feedback or alternate views. For the record, I have been following Liverpool since 1974.
