Aldi has announced it is to acquire the Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket store estates in the United States, adding approximately 400 stores to its portfolio. In a statement, the discounter said that the acquisition forms part of a larger divestiture of the Southeastern Grocers business to various entities. The 400 stores are located across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi. “Like Aldi, Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket have long histories and many loyal customers in the Southeast and we look forward to serving them in the years to come,” said Jason Hart, CEO, Aldi USA. “The time was right to build on our growth momentum and help residents in the Southeast save on their grocery bills. The transaction supports our long-term growth strategy across the United States, including plans to add 120 new stores nationwide this year to reach a total of more than 2,400 stores by year-end.”
Dutch regional supermarket chain Jan Linders is preparing to open its first stores rebranded under the Albert Heijn banner. On 29 August, the first converted store will open in Venlo, while the company expects to complete all store conversions by the end of 2023. The rebranding follows a partnership between the companies, announced last December, that will see Jan Linders continuing its activities as a franchisee of the supermarket giant. Despite joining forces with Albert Heijn, the family-run business said it would continue to focus on providing a personal service and retaining its regional roots. The deal will see Jan Linders convert most of its 63 stores in the provinces of Limburg, North Brabant, and Gelderland into Albert Heijn supermarkets, while all employees stay on.

German retailer dm-drogerie markt has rolled out an AI-based chatbot, dmGPT (dm Generative Pre-trained Transformer), for employees at dialogicum, its headquarters in Karlsruhe. The chatbot is based on the company's version of the AI language model GPT-3.5, and will enable approximately 3,300 dm employees at the company headquarters to use the technology in a safe environment, the retailer added. It offers a similar range of functions as the original ChatGPT, and uses the same technology in the background while operating on the dm infrastructure. The chatbot operates on the company's cloud infrastructure, which ensures security while handling data, and minimises the risks concerning data protection conflicts and lack of contractual framework conditions.
