European Company Plans to Build an Artificial Island for Green Hydrogen Production from Offshore Wind in Denmark

Climate change activism is increasingly gaining traction. And nations are gradually transitioning from fossil fuels to safer, green energy. Activists are relentlessly leveraging diverse platforms to voice their concerns about the future if nothing is done to decelerate climate change and find better sources of energy.?

In response, Europe seems to be leading in the fight against climate change and in green energy adoption. Recently, a company made known its plan to build an artificial island dedicated to the large-scale production of green hydrogen.

CIP Unveils Plans to Build Offshore Wind-to-Green Hydrogen Energy Islands in Germany and Denmark

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has revealed their plans to create a man-made island for the purpose of producing green hydrogen from offshore wind in Denmark in large quantities. The company has also struck a deal with Allianz Investment Management (AIM) to carry out a feasibility study for the same type of project in Germany.

The name of the island is Brinto and is proposed to be built on the Danish part of Dogger Bank. This area is expected to become a pivotal place for the future build-out of offshore energy systems in the North Sea. The energy infrastructure is expected to be up and running by 2030.

According to the company, 10 GW of offshore wind would be connected to the man-made island. And it will be basically used to generate green hydrogen through Power-to-X. 1 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year is expected to be produced from Brinto when it becomes fully functional. That’s about 7% of the total amount of hydrogen the EU is projected to consume in 2030.

CIP and Allianz Investment Management made it known on May 19, 2022, that they have closed a deal to carry out a feasibility study for a man-made island energy project. The study will be done in the German North Sea and the infrastructure would be connected to massive offshore wind farms. These business moves are fueled by the agreement among Ministers of Energy of Germany, Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands to accelerate the transition to green energy.

For both CIP and Allianz, this is not their first involvement in the energy island project. CIP already has stakes in different offshore wind farms globally and is also part of Vindo, an energy island project in Denmark. Allianz purchased a 25.2% stake in the 1.5 GW Hollandse Kust Zuid offshore wind farm in the Netherlands.

What do these energy projects tell you? It shows that the world is serious about transitioning to green energy. And green energy projects are expected to be common in the near future. Another question is, as a company, how are you getting ready for the energy switch?
