Europe Day: a better Europe starts in cities
9 May is Europe Day, kicking off the four-week countdown to the European elections on 6-9 June 2024. It is a day to think back to the EU’s founding values, but also to look ahead to how they can best be achieved in its next mandate.
One thing is clear, the EU needs to work with cities to deliver a just, green and prosperous future for everyone. That is why, this Europe Day, Eurocities and our membership of more than 200 major European cities, are calling on the next EU to utilise our transformative power to develop strong, effective urban policies.
Amongst other things, the next EU institutions will be responsible for reaching Europe’s climate targets, tackling the digital divide, and overcoming daily challenges faced by many people, from accessing affordable housing, to paying energy bills and putting healthy food on the table.??
As outlined in our manifesto, A better Europe starts in cities, cities are crucial to delivering a more united EU, closer to the people. For this reason, in addition to our manifesto, we have launched a series of policy statements making it clear to future EU leaders that:?
