EUROPE, COLONIZATION, & THE BRITISH EMPIRE.

EUROPE, COLONIZATION, & THE BRITISH EMPIRE.

I am writing to show how I view Europe, the Colonization of the world, and the British Empire upon which, at one time, the sun never set. The Muslim conquest of Spain set the stage for the Renaissance. But, before that, Marco Polo's travels gave Europeans the idea of the fabulous riches of the East, especially in China. However, there was no easy way of getting there; hostile nations were on the land route. By the 1400s, Portugal had their King Henry the Navigator. King Henry sent several expeditions along the African coast to find a route to China; in 1488, Portuguese Explorer Bartolomeu Dias rounded the Southern tip of Africa, opening the sea route to China for the Europeans. Four years later, in 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed Westward and ran into the Americas on behalf of Spain; he believed he had reached the East Indies.

According to the Catholic Church, Spain and Portugal were now the owners of the newly discovered lands by a decree from the Pope; the East for Portugal and the West for Spain. Portugal had set up slave trading posts during its expedition along the African coast since 1444. Before Christopher Columbus took the commission from Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, it is said that he was traveling up and down the Coast of Africa, capturing slaves. Slavery was not yet dehumanizing. At that time, it was an equal-opportunity job. The Arabs were raiding the Atlantic coast of Europe and making European men slaves and the women concubines in their harems. Now, back to the ownership of the newly discovered lands: none of the other European nations agreed with the Pope, and wars between European countries to assert their claims began.

Portugal and Spain had a headstart in the colonizing and enslavement business. The Portuguese colonized Angola in 1571; it was the first European colony in Africa. Portugal rented Macau, an area in Southern China, from the Ming Dynasty in 1557; that arrangement stayed in place until 1887 when Macau became a colony. Spain did as it pleased in the Americas. Spain's sailors transported gold from the Americas to Spain, and she became the wealthiest and most powerful nation in Europe. The ire of the other European countries was kindled, and the era of piracy began. The Dutch (Holland), the English Sea Dogs, the French, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Belgium joined the colonizing business.

For the nations to enjoy the riches of the Americas, European countries were making alliances; King Henry VIII, born in 1491, became king of England in 1509; he married Catherine of Aragon, a Spanish princess. She was barren, and the king wanted a divorce. The Catholic Pope refused, and Henry VIII formed his church. He became the head of the Church of England in 1534; There seems to have been some hanky panky going on; the famous Elizabeth I was the daughter of his second wife, Ann Boleyn, born September 7, 1533. Elizabeth I reigned from 1558 - 1603. During her reign, England destroyed the Spanish naval power in 1588, which set the stage for British colonization of North America.

America and the West Indies had their names stamped on the world map for thievery, plunder, and war. Spain was stealing from the natives, and England and France were confronting Spain on the high seas, destroying the Spanish galleons, and transporting the stolen gold to England and France. The first French colony in the West Indies was Tortuga which the French seized from the Spanish in 1630; Tortuga became a haven for pirates. The first English colony in the West Indies was St. Kitts, Barbuda, and Nevis established in 1620. England occupied Barbados in 1627 and captured Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655. England established its first colony in North America in 1609 and chased the Dutch out of New Amsterdam, which they renamed New York in 1664.

At this point, the New World was the playground, perhaps more appropriate, the battlefield for France and England. Check the history books to see the battles and changes in the various territories between France and England. For example, the action of the Plains of Abraham with General James Wolfe in command in 1759 gave England victory over France in Canada. The little-known Naval Battle of Grenada on July 6, 1779, cemented the English position in the West Indies as the French power was on the wane, which ended with their defeat by the Haitian slaves in 1804.

The Europeans turned their attention to the East, and China was the target. They traded with China for a while and thought opium would be a more significant money maker. Opium was illegal in China. The British cultivated opium in their Indian colonies and sold it to private individuals and companies who took the opium to China. Many prominent USA families became wealthy through what was known then as the China trade, (Opium) . The Chinese refusal to accept the drug trade resulted in the first opium war, 1839 - 1842, and the second opium war, 1856 - 1860. Various treaties were signed with the USA and the European powers involved. I have outlined the treaties in earlier articles. By that time, Australia was discovered in 1770 and was a British penal colony. The British colonists decimated the Aborigines of Australia and the Maori of New Zealand.

After the American Revolution and the Civil War, Europe turned its attention to Africa. The USA supported the Berlin conference and had a representative there. The history books call it "The Scramble for Africa, " and it was a scramble. In 1884 the major European powers met in Germany to divide the African continent into spheres of influence after they had weakened the African kingdoms; The Slave trade had removed millions of able-bodied fighting men from the various kingdoms. King Leopold of Belgium took the Congo. The Congo has never been the same. King Leopold was the Hitler of his day; he committed genocide in the Congo. Genocide in the Congo is something about which Europeans never talk. Germany did the same thing in Namibia. The British and French gobbled up most of the African continent, and their records of atrocities are not different.

I have written the above as background to show that Europe was not the fair, just, and benevolent colonial power that the modern Western world makes it out to be today. Ask the British about the atrocities in Nyasaland, now Malawi or Rhodesia, modern Zimbabwe; examine the cruelty of Cecil Rhodes and Ian Douglas Smith. Then turn to South Africa, where Cecil Rhodes was the Prime minister in the 1890s. Ghana, where the British wanted to sit on Ashanti's golden stool, and Nigeria and Benin, where they stole African Bronze artwork. Nor can we forget Winston Churchill, born in 1874 and wanted to kill the Iraqis with chemical weapons in the 1920s. He served as Prime Minister under Queen Elizabeth II when the USA and England supported the Apartheid Government in South Africa. Genocide, as I am writing, is happening in Yemen, a British colony from 1937 - 1963.

Please, do not tell me I must love my enemies; the Torah the Christians have misappropriated also says an eye for an eye, and in the New Testament, 2Thessalonians 1: 6 says seeing it is a righteous thing with YAHAWAH (God) to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you. Payback is required by the Highest. European Christian, there is no more hiding behind the Bible; all your deceptive schemes have been discovered and are in the open so that anyone can see. That pretend love is out the door; anyone can see the phony love from a mile away. European colonial history in the East and the West is a collection of hate, envy, and greed. Europe boasts of being wealthy and disdaining the poor, but all their riches were stolen from the empires/colonies they ruled unjustly.
