Europe is chipping in

If you compare the technology ecosystem coverage on websites like our own over the past decade, one thing that’s noticeable is the increased attention to the microprocessor industry. At pretty much any point in the 2010s, very few people would have been familiar with this vertical’s players except for the giants like Intel, AMD, and Arm. ASML? NXP? Infineon? Most people had never heard of them.

Things have changed significantly — at least here in Europe — in the past few years. As we talk more about the technological sovereignty of the region, it’s become apparent that being able to design and produce chips is an all-important capability.

The good news is that we do actually have quite an industry developed over time. From the chip-making machine producer ASML to the semiconductor design stalwart Arm, Europe has a lot to be proud of.

And what’s even better, we’re already seeing quite intriguing and promising new entrants into the space.

Just this week, an Aachen University spin-out Black Semiconductor announced raising €254 million in a mix of public and private funding to further develop an innovative chip technology that involves the use of graphene and photonics.

If everything goes well, we might see a new breed of faster, cheaper, and more energy-efficient chips in mass production as early as 2031. And given that the AI craze isn’t quite slowing down, Black Semiconductor’s wares are very likely to be in high demand then.

Check out more details and some context around the deal in our story by Ioanna Lykiardopoulou.
