EUDR and Latin America: Preparing for Sustainable Compliance and Global Market Access
With the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) on the horizon, Latin America's businesses is called to action—will it embrace a new era of sustainable practices or risk losing its position in global markets?
Latin America has long been a powerhouse in global agriculture, driving economies and feeding nations with its rich bounty of coffee, cocoa, palm oil, and more. Brazil's contribution alone reflects the region’s pivotal role in global trade and market sustainability, and Peru is a top exporter of fine cocoa beans, primarily to Europe.
However, alongside this economic success, there’s a pressing environmental challenge. Deforestation in Latin America and the Caribbean contributes significantly to global tropical forest loss, primarily driven by commercial agriculture. This trend raises urgent questions about the balance between economic growth and environmental preservation.
As we approach the end of 2024, the landscape is shifting dramatically with the introduction of the EUDR. This regulation represents a fundamental change in how businesses will operate within the global supply chain. Companies that fail to comply risk losing access to one of the world's largest markets, facing penalties that could jeopardize not only profits, but reputations built over decades.
?? Breaking News:
The European Commission has proposed a 12-month delay for EUDR implementation, pushing compliance deadlines to December 2025 (and June 2026 for SMEs). This postponement is still subject to approval by the European Parliament and the Council and has not yet been confirmed. ??
