EU Urged to Prepare for Quantum Cyber Attacks
A recent discussion paper has outlined proposals to safeguard member states within the European Union (EU) from quantum-enabled cyber-attacks. The paper offers recommendations on measures to be taken for enhanced protection.
A quantum cybersecurity agenda focused on Europe highlights the critical necessity of a new EU Coordinated Action Plan that promotes the development and adoption of quantum-secure technologies. The aim is to ensure preparedness before the anticipated 'Q-Day,' which signifies the moment when quantum computers become capable of compromising current cryptographic algorithms.
Experts predict that within the next five to ten years, there is a possibility of quantum computers emerging, which could render all digital information susceptible to cyber threats. This vulnerability arises due to the limitations of existing encryption protocols against quantum-powered attacks.
At the EU policy level, there is a recognized gap in addressing short-term threats, particularly regarding "harvest attacks." These attacks involve cybercriminals actively extracting encrypted data in anticipation of the future arrival of Q Day, when quantum computers may compromise current encryption methods. A strategic approach is needed to tackle such immediate threats.
