EU renewable energy: Wind and solar generation ticks up

As the EU sets goals for renewable energy, solar and wind electricity generation have seen a slight, but steady increase since 2020.

There is a seasonality to wind electricity generation as it usually peaks in the winter months but growth can be seen in the peaks. Data from DELTA ANALYSIS shows that, in February 2020, the peak was at 50,782.9 gigawatt-hours. Even though there was a dip in February 2021 (38,005.44 gigawatt-hour), there was a sharp increase in February 2022 (53,864.53 gigawatt-hour). Wind energy has already emerged as a steady source of electricity.

Solar energy, for its part, is slowly rising and is slowly but steadily becoming a more prominent source of electricity generation in the EU.

Where wind electricity generation tends to dip in summer months, solar electricity generation rises. Despite dips in the winter, the overall electricity generation from solar is steadily rising and that trend looks set to continue.

While non-renewable sources of electricity aren’t seeing a huge dip in generation, renewable electricity generation is catching up. This is likely due to the EU’s target of achieving 40% renewable electricity generation by 2030. At the same time, the Green Deal puts pressure on increasing renewable energy sources.

As the EU aims to achieve its renewable energy targets, wind and solar energy are proving to be essential sources of electricity.

While there is seasonality to the generation of these renewable sources, data from DELTA ANALYSIS shows steady growth in the peaks of wind electricity generation and a slow but steady rise in solar electricity generation.

With the Green Deal and other initiatives putting pressure on increasing renewable energy sources, the future looks bright for wind and solar energy in the EU.
