The EU Regulates, Google Demonstrates

Greetings, intelligist community!

A quick reminder, if you haven't done so yet, sign up for the main newsletter at: www.intelligist.ai !

This weekend, we produced two feature articles. In the first, we present to you some of the key points of the EU’s major announcement regarding AI regulation.

One of the main issues on the table was how to protect the growing European AI industry. France has been a notable leader, with Germany and Italy also producing major AI models. It seems that pressure from these countries’ leaders made the negotiations take longer than expected. These states are not ready to stifle their fledgling and potentially multi-billion Euro industries. The AI industry, meanwhile, has gotten to an influential position in record time, already swaying national leaders in their favor.

There is still much uncertainty about what the EU laws will finally look like. But here are the main points:

  1. Regulation of AI Systems: The EU aims to regulate AI systems, focusing on safety and respecting fundamental rights.
  2. Innovation and Investment: The legislation is designed to foster AI innovation and technology investment in Europe.
  3. Risk-Based Approach: The regulation adopts a risk-based approach, applying stricter rules to higher-risk AI applications.
  4. Prohibitions and Exceptions: Certain AI practices are banned, but exceptions exist for law enforcement with safeguards.
  5. High-Risk AI Systems: These will have specific regulations and transparency requirements.
  6. Governance and Penalties: Enhanced governance with EU-level enforcement and fines for non-compliance.
  7. Uncertainty Surrounding Open Source: Originally, leaks indicated exceptions for open-source AI, but this was not officially mentioned.

Gemini Launch

The second main feature of this weekend discussed Google Gemini. We did a more in-depth feature on what Gemini entails. In short, it will impact you soon if A. you are a Pixel 8 Pro user or B. if you use Google Docs or other Google Business products. If that is the case, you might be pleased to know that you will possibly be getting some very clever AI integrations soon.

Here is a rundown of the main points:

  1. Gemini AI Launch: Google introduces Gemini AI with three versions: Nano, Pro, and Ultra, marking a significant advancement in AI technology.
  2. Variants: Nano targets mobile use on Pixel 8 Pro, Pro powers Bard AI chatbot, and Ultra is in testing for advanced multimodal response generation.
  3. Strategic Shift: Google's release of Gemini signifies a strategic change, potentially challenging other AI platforms in versatility and innovation.
  4. Performance Claims: Google claims Ultra surpasses human experts in MMLU tests and outperforms major LLMs like ChatGPT.
  5. Integration and Impact: Gemini's integration with Google products could be transformative, especially in Docs, Business, and if Nano expands to more mobile devices.
  6. Controversy: Online users called out the use of highly manipulated video in the Gemini product demo.

Open-Source Mistral AI Raises $385 Million

France24 reported that Mistral AI has raised $385 million in its latest round of financing. The company was valued at over $2 billion prior to the fundraising round.

This is a big deal for supporters of open source. Open-source AI has been closing the gap on paid platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Critically, models such as Mistral are primarily transparent and any developer can modify to make their own variants.

Open-source supporters assert that having competitive open-source models gives consumers alternatives. It also helps to ensure safety and privacy, as it allows its code to be scrutinized, unlike closed models.

AI Being Used to Increase Satisfaction and Reduce Customer Returns

In an example of AI behaving well, retailers are starting to use AI to make customers happier while reducing their return costs. Retailers say this will help keep prices down for consumers while also reducing the carbon footprint of online sales.

AI startup MySizeID is pioneering a system that is capable of analyzing customer purchase data to understand their tastes and sizing. Their algorithm helps to predict if a client's choice wil actually fit them well and is also fed by data provided by manufacturers. The end result: less mistakes when buying and customers who don't have to wait for a return to get their item.

Nvidia Moving Some Chip Production to Vietnam

Nvidia made the unexpected announcement that it is moving some of its production to Vietnam.

The move is good news for Vietnam, but not so good for Taiwan. On the one hand, it is lost revenue. On the other, it shows the growing geopolitical worry over China’s potential to pin down the island.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang claims the move aims to develop Vietnam's semiconductor industry. Vietnam already houses Intel's biggest global chip assembly factory. Nvidia is currently the globally dominant chipmaker for AI systems but is facing increasing pressure from rivals such as AMD.

Well, that’s it for today. Sorry, no jokes, though don’t worry, it’s still early Monday and the coffee and antibiotics have yet to kick in (yes, still medicating that streptococcus!).
