The high level of malnutrition in Northeastern Nigeria has accelerated during the past months as a result of this, the European Union decided to allocated 100,000€ which is around 171 millions Nigerian Naira. This humanitarian assistance will benefit 160,000 people in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. The fund will enable the Nigerian Red Cross to deliver emergency assistance with a specific focus on malnourished children, pregnant women and lactating women. In essence the key aspects of the support include :
This initiative is part of the EU’s broader humanitarian efforts through the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The EU, the world’s leading donor of humanitarian aid, provides relief through its Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid department, headquartered in Brussels. The EU's humanitarian efforts aim to save lives, alleviate suffering, and protect human dignity in response to natural disasters and man-made crises.
The European Commission has an €8 million humanitarian delegation agreement with the IFRC to support the DREF. Established in 1979, the DREF provides immediate financial support for small-scale disasters that do not warrant a formal international appeal. National Red Cross or Red Crescent Societies can request funds from the DREF for immediate disaster response, which the IFRC allocates and donors replenish as needed. The agreement between the IFRC and the EU’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) allows for replenishment of the DREF for agreed operations up to €8 million.
