EU Green Week Highlights Water Resilience and Nature Restoration

I would like to share with you that the EU Green Week event is currently underway in Brussels, with water at the center of attention. This initiative is crucial because water is not just a resource; it is our lifeline. It is essential for people, the environment, and a sustainable economy. Natural disasters such as droughts and floods are becoming more frequent, exacerbating the EU’s water challenges. The pressure on water resources has arisen from years of poor management, pollution, and ecosystem degradation, compounded by climate change.

This year’s EU Green Week is part of the #WaterWIseEU campaign, aiming to encourage water-related dialogue across the EU and promote positive, collaborative solutions. The annual conference organized by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment focuses on water resilience. We discuss what needs to be done to make the EU more water-resilient, both now and in the future.

Furthermore, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) actively engages in water protection. Our Blue Deal initiative aims to comprehensively address EU water policy. Similar to the Green Deal, the Blue Deal emphasizes water protection. The EESC adopts own-initiative opinions that provide specific proposals for addressing water challenges. During the Blue Deal conference, these proposals are presented, urging the European Commission to prioritize EU-level water management. The EESC encourages civil society and other key stakeholders to join their Blue Deal initiative.

According to the latest Eurobarometer survey, EU citizens consider nature restoration the second most important task in terms of environmental awareness and thinking. I am delighted that people hold such positive views on this issue. For the upcoming EP elections on June 9, it would be crucial to send representatives to the Parliament who are committed to aquatic habitats and nature-based water management solutions. This can contribute to sustainable water use and environmental protection.
