EU FOOTPRINT & EMPLOYMENT

Commitment to our patients goes hand in hand with support at community level. Currently, our teams work tirelessly to build upon decades of innovation and development across all our European locations, to create value for healthcare professionals and their patients’ treatment and quality of life, but also local economies, and families, respecting the environment and our planet. At Fresenius Kabi, we strongly believe that investments in our production facilities, equipped with modern technologies, and support to our employee communities are mutually and directly beneficial. As such, we aim to support and develop both on the long term, and in the challenging context of 2020-21, Fresenius Kabi grew its workforce in Europe by 1.8%(1) and secured investments to inject into enhancing the capacity in investing in new technologies at our plants.

Santiago de Besteiros, in Portugal, is home to our Generics (or antibiotics) medicines facility, which stands at over 122,000 sq. meters. The facility is situated in Tondela, a region in which unemployment rates are lower than the national average, also thanks to the opportunities provided by Fresenius Kabi. With four production buildings, a compounding center and a logistics center, this site is responsible for a significant proportion of the area’s jobs. The COVID-19 crisis further reinforced our commitment to our local economies and internal communities also at this site, and we were able to maintain 100% of our personnel throughout the period. We also secured significant investment to inject into the site’s expansion.

?In Italy, Fresenius Kabi’s presence also has meaningful impact on local communities, for instance in the Veneto region, where employment instability is especially detrimental to younger demographic groups.

Since acquiring this API-production site in Villadose in 2008, we have continued to invest in development, manufacturing, and automation and as such, grown production almost tenfold in just over a decade. Employment in the site’s three antibiotics facilities and administration offices has also tripled in that timeframe. Each year, we bring in approximately 5 Italian PhD students from across the nation to work alongside our teams on our innovation projects, with up to 70% of participants joining the business full-time after graduation. For initiatives like these, we were recently awarded a prize for contributions to public service within our local community.

?Also in some locations around Europe, as we begin to recover from the global impacts of 2020, investments in property, plant and equipment grew in 2021, with major ongoing projects continuing into the years to come, including optimization and expansion of production facilities. These continued investments have contributed significantly to productivity and efficiency, whilst meeting highest level of quality standards, and the resulting positive growth and strong performance across plants, the company, and our people, have in turn allowed reinforced commitment to our culture.
