The European Commission is responding to the US' historic Inflation Reduction Act with a bold move: it plans to redirect €800bn from its Covid-19 recovery fund towards tax credits and relax state aid rules. The reforms promise greater transparency for European businesses while also boosting investments in green energy production technologies such as solar power, wind batteries and heat pumps - estimated at an investment of €170bn by 2030. The United Kingdom's green industries are facing a looming threat from the US and EU climate initiatives. Unless Britain sets more ambitious goals to cut emissions, they risk being left behind in global commerce by their larger trading counterparts. Fueling this increase of "protectionism" is President Biden’s $369 billion Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Despite bold ambitions, it takes an average of 10 years before new mines can be operational - yet demand for critical raw materials is predicted to skyrocket 500% by 2050, according to the World Bank.
