EU climate tech feels the heat

As the UN Climate Change Conference in Baku wraps up this week, the EU is under pressure to make good on its promise to lead the global green transition.?

With Donald Trump set to take office yet again, experts predict an incoming "wrecking ball to global climate diplomacy, " as fellow climate deniers-in-office, like Argentina's Javier Milei , throw a hefty wrench into the works.??

As the war in Ukraine escalated this week, the EU was reminded that the transition to renewable energy is not just a choice, but a necessity.?

Yet, infighting amongst member states with differing views on climate change, and the EU's slow-moving institutional setup, are making some policymakers doubtful that the bloc will be able to agree on fresh climate targets that are ambitious enough. This comes at a time when many are looking inwards, prioritising growing economic concerns.

What the EU needs now is fresh ideas, new technology, and, most of all, innovation that can help 'refuel' the bloc's appetite for going green.?

This week, our reporter Si?n Geschwindt dove into two promising updates from the EU's climate tech ecosystem: the move to commercialise fusion power and the birth of nanoprinters , which promise to shorten discovery time for nanomaterials from decades to mere months. ??
