EU AI Act Comes Into Force 1 August 2024

The EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) is a regulatory framework established by the European Union to ensure AI systems are safe, transparent, and respect fundamental rights. It categorises AI systems into different risk levels, with stricter rules for high-risk applications.

This AI Act will come into force across all 27 EU Member States tomorrow - 1 August 2024. It includes variable transition periods for different parts of the legislation. Starting 2 February 2025, prohibited AI practices must be withdrawn from the market. The majority of its provisions will be enforced beginning 2 August 2026.

Call for Participation on the AI Pact

The EU Commission issued this press release on 22 July 2024, promoting the “AI Pact." which seeks voluntary commitments to begin implementing the AI Act’s requirements ahead of the legal deadline.

The AI Pact was initially launched in November 2023 and received responses from over 550 organisations across various sizes, sectors, and countries. This broad participation highlights the industry’s proactive approach to complying with forthcoming regulations.

The AI Pact is is structured around two pillars:

Pillar I acts as a gateway to engage the AI Pact network, encourages the exchange of best practices, and provides with practical information on the AI Act implementation process;

Pillar II encourages AI system providers and deployers to prepare early and take actions towards compliance with requirements and obligations set out in the legislation.
