Bridging Policy and Pedagogy: Preparing Educators and Leaders for a stronger skills system - Reflections from the #FESkillsCollective
Last week, our Managing Director - Gavin Lumsden had the pleasure of attending the FE Skills Collective, an inspiring gathering focused on aligning policy and pedagogy to reinforce a more robust skills system. They explored ways to strengthen further education, addressing key themes that directly impact the landscape of our sector. He left the event feeling energised and committed to championing these themes, together we can push forward to make tangible improvements.
Here are his seven takeaway themes that drove his thoughts during the day:
1. Recruitment
Attracting talent to the further education sector remains a pressing challenge. Recruitment goes beyond merely filling positions it’s about identifying individuals who are not only qualified but also passionate about making a difference. Our conversation at the FE Skills Collective highlighted the need for a strategic approach that emphasises long-term investment in teachers who are committed to the mission of further education. By fostering partnerships with institutions and creating pathways for career progression, we can ensure a steady pipeline of skilled educators ready to shape the future.
2. Stakeholders
Understanding and engaging with stakeholders is crucial to building a stronger skills system. Our discussions emphasised the importance of an inclusive approach that brings together employers, educational institutions, government bodies, and learners. Each stakeholder plays a vital role, and fostering collaboration can drive innovation, ensuring the needs of both the economy and individual learners' dynamics are met. This holistic approach to stakeholder engagement encourages shared ownership and accountability, a crucial element in building an impactful educational ecosystem.
3. Dual Professionalism
Dual professionalism acknowledges that educators in the FE sector are experts in both their industry and the art of teaching. This theme resonated with attendees, who stressed the need for professional development that nurtures both sets of skills. By supporting dual professionals, we create a teaching workforce that not only imparts knowledge but also models industry best practices. This dual competency ensures learners receive relevant and current education that aligns with real-world expectations.
4. Teacher Training
Teacher training is foundational to high-quality education. As we discussed, effective teacher training programs should go beyond pedagogy and incorporate elements that prepare educators for the diverse challenges of the classroom. The focus should be on fostering resilience, adaptability, and inclusivity in teaching practices. Moreover, training must evolve to address the specific demands of the further education sector, equipping teachers with the tools they need to support learners with varied needs and aspirations.
5. High-Quality Teaching
Quality teaching is at the heart of a successful education ecosystem. Throughout our discussions, it became clear that high-quality teaching goes beyond delivering content it’s about creating an engaging learning environment that motivates and challenges learners. Emphasising ongoing professional development and reflective practice can help educators continually refine their craft. By fostering an organisational culture of excellence, we ensure that learners receive the best possible education, equipping them with the skills needed to thrive in their careers and contribute to society.

6. Policy in Practice
Translating policy into effective practice is essential for creating meaningful change. As we explored at the FE Skills Collective, there is often a disconnect between policy objectives and the realities of implementation. Bridging this gap requires a nuanced understanding of the educational landscape and a willingness to adapt policies to local contexts. By working collaboratively with policymakers, educators can ensure that policies are not only relevant but also achievable and beneficial for both teachers and learners.
7. Culture
Finally, we focused on the role of culture in fostering a positive learning environment. A supportive and inclusive culture within further education organisations is vital for the success of both learners and staff. This includes creating an environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels valued and respected. By promoting a culture of continuous learning and collaboration, we can empower educators and learners alike to reach their full potential.
Conclusion
These themes represent the building blocks of a stronger, more cohesive skills system that supports both educators and learners. The FE Skills Collective provided an invaluable platform for sharing ideas and strategies, and we are excited to carry these insights forward.
Together with partners like FE News, Education and Training Foundation, and Edge Foundation, we can continue to drive positive change in the further education and skills sector, building a future where policy and pedagogy work hand in hand to create opportunities for all.
