Etiquette vs. Human Relations: Which Truly Defines Us?

Yes, we are human beings. We are civilized. We follow certain #etiquettes that distinguish us from animals. But here’s a question for you: Is etiquette more important than human relations? ??♂???♀?
?? Pause and think about it.
Imagine this scenario: You’re dressed immaculately for an important day at the office. Your outfit is on point, your confidence is high, and you're ready to conquer the day. As you walk out, you notice your house-keeping staff standing by, tears silently streaming down her face. She’s clearly upset. ??
Now, here’s the dilemma: Do you offer a comforting hug ?? to show your empathy, risking your outfit? Or do you prioritize your appearance and move on with your day? ??
This situation is a real test of what we value more—our etiquette or our humanity.
The Essence of Etiquette
Etiquette is vital. It’s the set of unwritten rules that guide our behavior in society. It teaches us to say “please” and “thank you,” to hold the door open for others, and to respect personal space. ?? These practices ensure that we interact in a way that’s respectful and considerate. They are the social lubricants that make daily interactions smoother.
But does etiquette always serve the higher purpose? ??
The Power of Human Connection
In moments of genuine #human #connection, etiquette can sometimes take a back seat. When we prioritize empathy and kindness, we strengthen the bonds that truly make us human. ??

Let’s revisit the example: If you choose to offer that hug, you're not just breaking a rule of etiquette; you're demonstrating that you value another person’s emotional well-being over superficial appearances. You’re telling them, "I see you, and I care." That moment of connection could make a world of difference to someone who is struggling. ??
What Would You Do?
Ask yourself, the next time you’re faced with a choice between etiquette and human connection, which will you choose? Will you worry about the “right” thing to do according to societal norms, or will you follow your heart? ??
Balancing Etiquette and Empathy
Of course, it’s not always about choosing one over the other. There’s a balance ?? to be struck. Being mindful of others and following social norms doesn’t have to conflict with being kind and empathetic.
Next time you’re in a similar situation, consider how you can uphold both—show empathy while still respecting the social framework. Maybe a simple, “I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Is there anything I can do to help?” would suffice, offering comfort without crossing boundaries. ??
In Conclusion
Ultimately, being truly civilized goes beyond following a set of rules. It’s about recognizing when to prioritize human connections, even if it means bending the rules a little. After all, isn’t the essence of civilization found in our capacity for compassion? ??
So, what do you think? Is etiquette more important than human relations? Or is it time we redefined what it means to be truly civilized? ??

A couple of years ago by responding to my empathic impulse I did something which amounted to ignoring the general manners. Your post prompted me to call that experience back and gain a fresh perspective on this. Thank You Dr Sandhya Seshadri for making that learning possible. Thank You for raising this issue.
