Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam has announced it will start constructing a new $5 billion airport later this year. the airport would cover an area of 13 square miles and be able to handle 100 million passengers a year.
“Bole Airport is not going to accommodate us; we have a beautiful expansion project. The airport looks very beautiful and very large but with the way that we are growing, in about three or four years we are going to be full,” Tewolde said. Bole International doubled in size last year, but its annual capacity is only 22 million passengers
The airport will be built in Bishoftu, a town 39 km (25 miles) south east of Addis Ababa, and it will have the capacity to handle 100 million passengers a year.
