Our Lord Jesus Christ said, "The people of Nineveh will stand up and judge this generation on the day of judgment; Because they repented at the preaching of Jonah. Matthew 12:41 Therefore, today we repent and condemn the wrong done to the world and Ethiopia. Ethiopia will bring this generation before God's judgment.

As the story is told in the book of Jonah, the prophet Jonah went to Nineveh and prophesied about destruction because of the city's excessive wickedness and was called by God.

As recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures, Nineveh was also where Sennacherib died at the hands of his two sons, and then fled to the vassal land. The book of the prophet Nahum is taken up with prophetic condemnations against Nineveh. The doom and utter destruction are prophesied. The book of Jonah describes Nineveh as a wicked city that deserves to be destroyed. God sent Jonah to the people of Nineveh to preach to them about the coming destruction, and they fasted and repented. As a result, God saved the city; Jonah opposed this and explained that God will show mercy to his people. These people don't know the difference between right and wrong ("they don't know their right hand from their left") and people have no mercy for the animals in the city.

Accordingly, next week, the holy fathers of the EOTC have announced a three-day period of mourning and prayer. Interestingly, this week of prayer coincides with the regular Nineveh annual festival. Trust me, I don't think this is a coincidence. I feel that God is coming for a miracle.

What the people of Nineveh did was repent. God sent Jonah to the people of Nineveh to preach to them about the coming destruction, and they fasted and repented. As a result, God saved the city.

How did the people of Nineveh repent?

They (Ninevites) realized they had done wrong, prayed to God, and turned from their evil deeds. The first step is to have a broken heart for their God.

The people of Nineveh believed in God. A fast was announced and everyone wore sackcloth from the oldest to the youngest. When Jonah's warning reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his clothes, put on sackcloth, and sat on the ground. Even today, the EOTC and Eastern Orthodox Churches are thinking about the three days Jonah spent in the fish in Nineveh fasting. Some Christians fast this holiday by abstaining from food and drink. Followers abstain from meat, fish, and dairy products.
