Ethiojobs Product Upgrade and Annual Milk Run Launch: bridging the gap between education and employment in Ethiopia.

In Ethiopia, educated unemployment is one of the major hurdles graduates face entering the workforce. These individuals often find themselves disillusioned as their high expectations are unmet, leading to prolonged job searching and continued reliance on their families. However, the country is making strides in addressing this challenge through innovative solutions that align educational outcomes with the labor market demands. Two pioneering initiatives, Ethiojobs and Dereja, both units of the Africa Jobs Network (AJN), are at the forefront of empowering Ethiopia's youth and bridging the gap between education and employment.

Ethiojobs' Upgraded Platform: A Step Forward

Ethiojobs, Ethiopia's leading online job portal, recently launched an upgraded website on May 16th, 2024. This revamped platform is designed to revolutionize the job search experience for both employers and job seekers. Key features of the upgraded Ethiojobs website include an enhanced user interface that streamlines the job search process, an advanced search filter that helps job seekers quickly find relevant opportunities, an advanced Applicant Tracking System that aids employers in managing the recruitment process efficiently, a personalized job recommendation based on users’ skills and a comprehensive reporting and analytics to optimize employers recruitment strategies.

These features directly address the mismatch between education and labor market needs by facilitating better job matching and streamlining recruitment. This enhanced platform is expected to reduce candidates’ time searching for jobs and help employers find qualified candidates more efficiently.

Dereja's "Milk Run" Campaign: A Nationwide Initiative

Complementing Ethiojobs' efforts, Dereja, AJN's social business unit, has launched the "Milk Run" University Job Fair Tour and National Career Expo. This groundbreaking initiative connects graduating students with leading employers across Ethiopia and beyond. Supported by the Mastercard Foundation, Ethiopian Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Labor and Skills, the "Milk Run" campaign includes:

  1. University Job Fair Tour: Engaging 30 public universities across six regions, facilitating interactions between 600 companies and 70,000 students.
  2. National Career Expo: Culminating in Addis Ababa, this event features 400 companies and 20,000 students and provides a pivotal platform for fresh graduates.

University Tour Stops:

  • Haramaya University: June 29th, 2024
  • Jimma University, Hawassa University: July 2nd, 2024.
  • Bahir Dar University: August 1st, 2024.
  • Wollo University: September 1st.
  • The Grand Finale: National Career Expo, Millenium Hall, Addis Ababa.

The Milk Run culminates at the National Career Expo at Millennium Hall in Addis Ababa on October 17th & 18th, 2024. This major event provides a platform for over 20,000 graduates to showcase their skills to a vast network of potential employers from over 400 companies.

The "Milk Run" campaign aims to tackle youth unemployment by offering a reliable platform for recent graduates to connect with employers, find job opportunities, and enhance their skills. This initiative reflects a commitment to addressing the challenges faced by young people entering the workforce, as it provides them with direct access to job opportunities and professional development resources.

Synergy in Action: Combining Ethiojobs and Dereja’s Efforts

Ethiopia's job market is going through some big changes. With more educated young people entering the workforce, challenges and exciting possibilities are ahead. Ethiojobs.net , the leading online job portal in Ethiopia, and Dereja , a social business unit focused on youth employment, are teaming up to tackle the issue of educated unemployment head-on. By rolling out Ethiojobs' new and improved website and launching Dereja's innovative "Milk Run" campaign, we're not just addressing a problem – we're offering hope and opportunities to Ethiopia's talented and ambitious youth.
