THE ETHICS OF USING AI: PART 2 Behind the Scenes: How I Put This Article Together Exploring AI: How Does It Affect Authenticity?

By Leo Novsky with ChatGPT Support

A week ago, in THE ETHICS OF USING AI: PART 1: Father-son conversation reflection article, I shared the story of a profound conversation with my 12-and-a-half-year-old son about the ethics of using AI for personal projects, where he passionately challenged me and even debated directly with ChatGPT.

In this part, I’m taking you behind the scenes to show how I created the first article and how I used AI in the process. Below is a detailed list of every prompt I used to create Part 1. My goal is to encourage a healthy discussion about the ethical and authentic ramifications of using AI in content creation.

Prompts Used to Create This Article (with Timestamps)

Here’s a complete list of every prompt I entered during the process of creating this article, including my guidance and the AI’s role.

(9:45 AM): "Summarize this conversation for a LinkedIn post from the view of the father who was listening to his 12-year-old having this intense conversation with the AI about his father's use of AI to help with creation of his posts. Share the real pride in my son in creating such solid and passionate arguments against the use of technology for things that are close to our hearts like the podcast we are starting. And my own realization that, hey, I can easily dilute my authenticity and to heed my son's warning. That his arguments that authenticity is lost when a single word is changed by the AI while the AI argues that it is the intention and the voice and the points that are creating a collaborative experience."

(9:55 AM): "This happened last night, on a Thursday rainy evening, as I was taking my son from his hockey practice."

(10:00 AM): "It was a Monday night."

(10:05 AM): "The argument was, so in the setup paragraph, talk about how the conversation was unique in so many ways, unlike any other I've ever had with my precocious son. It wasn't about Nerf guns that he 3D prints or the Mazda Miata that he dreams of converting one day or the hockey that he is so passionate about. The argument and discussion were unique for one, because of the topic, and the topic was the ethics of using AI to help create posts for something that I care about, such as the Defying The Odds Podcast Show . The second thing that was so unique about this conversation is that it was between not just him and I, but between him and I and the AI that we were literally talking about. Last month, I bought the monthly membership for ChatGPT and have been using it increasingly to help me streamline my posts and help me with research and strategy. It has been invaluable and saved hours of work. My son posed a very powerful question: Is it authentic and is it ethical to use AI to help edit any post that is important beyond checking grammar, spelling, and punctuation? In my rush to embrace AI, I have not really thought that through until he asked. This conversation is really profound because of that."

(10:15 AM): "Also share the details of the conversation, specifically that as I was listening to my son talk to the AI and the AI answering verbally, the AI would counter or agree with my son and then pose another open Socratic question. List the questions that the AI asked my son as follow-up questions, one by one. Then talk about how I was just quietly observing with awe my son reacting to those questions in a very thoughtful manner and taking a stand, countering and challenging the AI, refining its own answers, and allowing Kai to have a real sense of accomplishment of having a conversation that he found worth having. This, of course, also brings up another point, which is I was not actually talking for most of the time. He already heard my version that intent, content, and ideas create ownership and therefore ethical and authentic. He didn't want to hear from his dad. He wanted to know what AI thinks of itself."

(10:25 AM): "Turn this into a multi-part post, with this part being called Part 1, and the title of it is The Ethics of Using AI. Thank you for watching."

(10:45 AM): "Condense it to 3,000 characters."

(11:00 AM): "Add this picture into the article."

(11:10 AM): "What can I say catchy in a post to attract people's attention to this article."

(11:20 AM): "Add an introductory first of all add a title of the part two of this article and behind the scenes on how I put this article together and the subtitle of the exploration of using AI. Does it affect authenticity? How does it affect authenticity? Then invite the audience to consider the ethical and authentic ramifications of this process. Invite people to discuss and share this article and its previous part to start a conversation worth having and then invite people to come and listen to the Defying the Odds podcast, especially the episode with Kyle Weller where I will ask an expert on the pros and cons of AI use."

Exploring Authenticity in AI

This process took over an hour and helped me slowly refine the article without needing to sit and write continuously. For someone like me with ADD, this creates incredible support, allowing me to focus my ideas without being bogged down by the mechanics of writing.

But I’m still struggling with the question of whether using AI makes this process less authentic. After all, I used ChatGPT to help, even in writing this article (though I won’t bother you with those prompts).

What Do You Think?

Is my son right? Does using AI in this way compromise authenticity? Or is this a new kind of collaboration, where the creator remains in control of the content while leveraging technology as a tool?

I’d love for you to weigh in on this conversation. Share your thoughts in the comments below, share this article and Part 1 with your network, and help start a discussion worth having.

Also, tune in to the Defying The Odds Podcast Show—especially the upcoming episode with Kyle Weller from OneBridge.ai, where I’ll explore the pros and cons of using AI in content creation with an expert.
