Ethics & Etiquette
I recently came across a quote from Emily Post that said: “Etiquette must, if it is to be more than trifling use, include ethics as well as manners.?Certainly, what one is, is of far greater importance that what one appears to be.”
I agree with this and then it got me thinking… Well, if Ethics is to be more than a tick off the box (a trifling), then it must include etiquette and manners.?Because for it to be of importance, it must co-exist as part of the individual’s life.?Just like etiquette and manners.
I’ve seen many information and readings that seem to differentiate between ethics and etiquette as one being of principle and the other being of how to behave.?But shouldn’t how you behave mirror that of your principle? That the proper and polite way to behave reflects on the principles that govern your behavior?
Maybe I’m too simplistic in my way of thinking. As some would say that Ethics can mean different things to different people, while Etiquette can differ according to culture, ethnicity, religion, country, etc.?To a certain extent, this is may be true.??But – at least for me – both Ethics and Etiquettes fundamentals should be the same, i.e. of fairness, treating people with dignity, being polite, etc.
What do you think??Would love to hear your experience
