Last Night, I Couldn’t Sleep.

You know those nights when your mind just won’t switch off?

Last night was one of those for me. I lay there, thinking about AI—how far we’ve come and the tricky road ahead. AI is amazing, no doubt. It’s transforming how we work, how we market, and how we live. But there’s a nagging thought that keeps coming back to me: Are we thinking enough about the consequences? Are we balancing innovation with ethics?

Recently, Gartner put out an article that really caught my attention. They talk about how businesses should focus on GenAI initiatives that are not only feasible but actually valuable.

According to their 2024 poll, 40% of companies have rolled out GenAI in more than three business units, with customer service and marketing being the biggest players. But as great as that sounds, I started wondering—are we moving too fast?

Are we asking the right questions about the ethical implications?

AI around the world: What different countries are doing

The OECD has been reviewing AI strategies across different countries, and the differences are striking. Take Germany, for example. We’ve got 36 AI policies in place, and they’re all about making sure AI aligns with human values. But here’s the thing—they’re moving cautiously, maybe too cautiously. Their focus on ethics is great, but it’s also slowing down innovation.

Then there’s Sweden, with 16 AI policies. Sweden’s approach is all about balance—pushing forward with innovation while making sure it’s done responsibly. They’re focusing on sustainability and ethical AI, which is super important, but again, it raises the question: Are we slowing down too much in a race where speed matters?

And let’s not forget the big players. The EU has a whopping 63 AI policies. They’re leading the way in data protection and ethical standards, but the flip side is that these strict regulations might be putting the brakes on innovation. On the other hand, the U.S., with 82 AI policies, is more focused on keeping its spot as the global leader in AI. They’re pushing boundaries, which is exciting, but it’s also a bit worrying when you think about the potential ethical fallout.

The ethical razor′s edge

Here’s where it gets tricky. The policies and regulations we see around the world are meant to protect us—to ensure that AI doesn’t lead us down a path we can’t return from. But at the same time, they’re also creating barriers that could slow down innovation. It’s a tough balance. In the EU, for instance, the focus on data protection is crucial, but it’s also making it harder for startups to innovate quickly. In the U.S., the more relaxed approach is leading to rapid advances, but at what cost?

This is what kept me up last night. How do we, as marketers and tech enthusiasts, navigate this tightrope? We need to be pushing the envelope, but we also need to make sure we’re not compromising on ethics. It’s not enough to just think about the next big innovation—we have to think about the impact it will have on people, on society, on the world.

Recently, I took the "Ethics of AI" course at the University of Helsinki which really opened my eyes to the complexities of AI's impact. It’s not just about innovation; it’s about responsibility.

It taught me that we, as the creators and users of these technologies, have a duty to think beyond the algorithms and code. We have to think about the human side of AI—how it affects lives, changes industries, and even reshapes our social fabric.

The impact of the AI act and the requirements of article 4

The European Union’s AI Act is a significant piece of legislation that aims to regulate AI, ensuring that it’s developed and used responsibly. One particular aspect of this act that caught my attention is Article 4, which mandates that companies either appoint an AI instructor or provide adequate training on AI ethics and safety. This requirement is a game-changer for many businesses, especially smaller firms that may not have the resources to easily comply. But it’s also a necessary step in ensuring that AI technologies are deployed responsibly and that those who use them understand their broader implications.

The AI Act, along with its focus on ethics, is a strong move towards creating a safer, more controlled environment for AI development. But again, there’s that balance—will these regulations slow down innovation? Will companies find themselves bogged down by compliance issues instead of pushing forward with new developments?

Deep Dive: How the AI act stacks up Against other national regulations

As we compare the AI Act to the frameworks in other leading countries, some key differences emerge:

  • Germany: Germany’s approach is closely aligned with the EU AI Act, emphasizing human-centric AI. However, Germany’s additional scrutiny, especially for AI in critical infrastructure, means that companies face even more stringent requirements. This double layer of regulation could slow down AI deployment but ensures that ethical and safety concerns are deeply embedded in AI systems.
  • Sweden: Sweden’s emphasis on sustainability and ethics complements the EU’s AI Act but adds an extra focus on environmental impact. Swedish companies must not only comply with the EU’s regulations but also demonstrate how their AI systems contribute to sustainability goals. This could make AI development in Sweden more challenging but aligns with the country’s broader environmental objectives.
  • United States: The U.S. takes a more decentralized approach, with sector-specific regulations rather than a comprehensive national framework like the AI Act. This allows for faster innovation but can lead to inconsistent ethical standards. Companies in the U.S. may find it easier to develop and deploy AI, but they also face greater risks of ethical pitfalls and public backlash if their systems are seen as harmful or biased.

Why this matters to us

If you’re working in AI or any tech-related field, these issues aren’t just theoretical—they’re the real challenges we face every day. We need to be asking the tough questions, not just about what AI can do, but about what it should do. How do we innovate responsibly? How do we make sure that the AI we’re developing is safe, ethical, and aligned with the values we care about?

This isn’t just about getting a good night’s sleep. It’s about ensuring that the AI technologies we’re developing today don’t create problems we’ll regret tomorrow. It’s about finding that balance between pushing forward and holding back when necessary. Because at the end of the day, we’re not just building technology—we’re building the future.
