Chapter 1 : Ethical coaching and its relationships

Authors: Wendy-Ann Smith & Carrie Arnold

Abstract??

Coaching is a fast-growing helping profession. As more mid-career individuals become educated as independent professional coaches, others in the workforce are equally drawn to coach training opportunities to widen their skills, shift their career trajectory, maximise operational success, or deepen their leadership scope. There are multiple advantages to having more professionals in the workforce with mindset shifts, increased listening ability, or a capability to evoke awareness in others. However, it is essential to ensure distinctions between those who coach and those who possess coaching skills. The field of professional coaching, like any other helping profession, is rooted in principles of competency, integrity, and accountability. Strong ethical practice is the foundation of all professional coaching and is a vital component that may lag in a conscious application or personal responsibility. It is time to question the various roles individuals may play in the coaching profession and begin to interrogate and highlight ethical practice across multiple perspectives, systems, and relationships.
