Ethical action, sustainability and resilience - building company level value

Ethical action, sustainability and resilience - building company level value

So much has happened and news (good and otherwise) since the last edition, I'm spoiled for choice what will headline in this edition and what to leave out for a later edition. Please forgive the length if I run on a little, as there literally is so much to share.

  • Media and Online appearances and features for Five Horizons and Steve Sanders
  • About achieving carbon neutrality the right way; good and the unfortunate examples
  • Ark2030 and activism among investors to make massive sustainability impact
  • Greek households helped on journey to be more sustainable at point of usage
  • Unless we all go naked, we need this kind of initiative to solve fashion's long impact

Steve and Five Horizons in the Media; general online activity

Inside Small Business Australia published an article from me on the topic of ‘The role of small business in achieving a sustainable future’ - I've had really good feedback and would appreciate yours too (explained and links here).

Authority Magazine published my interview on 'How to Take Your Company from Good to Great' here at this link (check out the great voice accessibility replay)

Sustainability Speaks - I was interviewed by Saskia explained and links here discussing Global Citizenship and Five Horizons (strategy to win through resilience, ethics, sustainability)

Busines Insider / Business Graduates Association article explained and links here asking 'What does your business stand for?'?of course, generationally, purpose-led is important.

Watch out, soon to be announced: podcast by Prof Edward Freeman who interviews me on the subject of Stakeholder Capitalism - I am truly humbled to have had a meeting of minds, and to have my book actually quoted in that interview by the long-time thought leader in Stakeholder Theory since the 1970's - how fortunate I was to meet Ed and to make a new friend too... their website makes very interesting reading so do visit and let me know what you discover there.

And an interesting angle (read here) inspired by the mini-heat wave we experienced, which caused me to reflect this is one of many events that rapidly pulls the masses over tipping points that will result in greater mainstream demands for business-activism; accountability.

Carbon Neutrality In the News

Yes you've read about this ad nauseam. As companies race to tick their respective 'common sense' boxes proving they have a plan to address carbon footprint; a) the box ticking results in flippant decisions that do more brand damage than good, and b) carbon neutrality, though critical, is only one of 17 sustainable development goals Five Horizons asks you to tackle.

In a previous edition I quoted a diligent expert to explain the fundamentals and how it's vital that when paying into schemes for carbon credits (if tech doesn't yet exist to actually reduce carbon impact) then at least make sure the schemes are legitimate and ethical.

As you can imagine, BP, Shell, Repsol and others, have massive quantities of carbon credits to pay for, because petrochemicals is unavoidably a sector in the red zone. On their staff must be many aspiring execs hoping to be rewarded for savvy deals. BP was in the news for a huge mis-step in their carbon trading cost cutting manoeuvres which back-fired.

Though we can't solve our carbon issues swiftly, at least use good common sense by asking advice and finding ethical and diligent schemes that will make sure your carbon credits make an impact, and avoid muddying your reputation.

In better news I saw that Convergent Technology Ltd has successfully certified as Carbon Neutral through a well-reputed facilitation partner CarbonNeutral.com - and yes I did ask my contact at Auditel whose feedback was positive - well done to anyone who takes the right steps in the right way.

Ark2030 and how they're making impact

Ark2030 is on a mission to reverse the climate crisis and end the destruction of Planet Earth. Some of the planets wealthiest people have already put their money where their mouths are for the previous 20 years. Ark2030 now has two parallel strategies that you can read about here - this is something you CAN get involved in and make a real impact yourselves.

Ark2030 has developed the roadmap to restore the world’s greatest ecosystems across every continent and every ocean; working to create a unique global collaboration of science, academia, landowners, NGOs and ‘on the ground’ implementation partners.

They plan to achieve this through:

  • The restoration of the 500m Hectares of Planet Earth?destroyed by mankind since the beginning of the industrial revolution
  • Investing in the companies?that will turn back the dial on the climate crisis

I've sent copies of Five Horizons to the team so they can consider whether our approach can help their mission to create community templates for sustainable business and lifestyles.

Sometimes trust a Greek bearing gifts and good news

There's a Greek government plan to help households replace old fridges, freezers and air conditioners with more efficient models, to cut down on electricity bills (usage). Citizens there may buy up to three appliances per family at between 30 and 50 per cent discount.

Having invested about €7 billion to help households pay electricity and petrol bills, government estimates this could cut energy needs by 40 per cent - equivalent to the energy consumed every year by a city of 100,000 people, saving €40m /yr on gas and oil imports.

What is Fashion up to, and is it improving?

Which ever way you carve up the numbers, the Fashion industry is one of the worst environmental polluters, water wasters and carbon creators. Yes, of course we could buy less and buy more ethically, but for this to become a scale solution that offers us all the kind of alternatives we are hoping for, some smart and courageous people will need to be activated and funded to take giant leaps forward.

If you are interested in knowing more about what's being done in that sector, take a look at this event by the Institute of Positive Fashion that at least appears to be one that gathers together some of the worlds best informed and most genuinely committed people, to create meaningful and impactful action.
