Ethernet Switching Everywhere!

At Packet Architects we have been struck how truly successful Ethernet is! It is, simply put, a network technology which has outlasted and outperformed all other networking technologies during the last 40+ years. Some recent examples:

• Intel recently purchased Barefoot Networks and it seams Intel will now go head with Ethernet Switching to replace Intels Omni-path interconnect technology.
• Supercomputer company Cray upon building a new interconnect for their next generation supercomputers selected Ethernet
• All the datacenter companies are running Ethernet, no other technology has the cost or the scalability needed to support 250,000+ servers in a system
• In vehicles/cars Ethernet is running ahead and slowly but surely killing all the special busses which exists there. In this space there is two major advancements:

1. New PHY standard which reduces the number of wires in a car
2. Ethernet speeds - Going to 1Gbit+ is nothing older network technologies can handle

• In the industrial space Ethernet has been coming along for the last decade but with some special time-specific features. They are being standalized in the TSN for some time now. 
• In wireless/4G/5G Networks Ethernet will be replacing the CPRI links allowing providers to use Ethernet switches in the fronthaul between wireless base stations and radio heads. In the 3G/4G generation the backhaul was moved to Ethernet.
• In the aerospace industry Ethernet is replacing whatever legacy networks there existed before the Avionics Full-Duplex Switched Ethernet (AFDX) standard.
• In space - the final frontier - is moving towards using Ethernet instead of legacy protocols lite spacewire

If you are going to build any kind of networked equipment why would you ever choose something different compared to Ethernet? The speed/cost is hard to overcome.
