There are two schools of thought currently dominating the market outlook. If inflation stays ‘higher-for-longer’, short-duration government bond ETFs will be crucial. In the opposing scenario, the impact of record-high interest rates tips the US economy into recession, forcing the Fed to cut rates, a boon for longer-duration US Treasuries.

Due to the uncertainty over which scenario plays out, fund selectors are adopting a barbell approach with their fixed income allocations by investing at both ends of the US Treasury yield curve (p.32).
