ETERNAL DESIGN OF THE LIMITLESS MIND
Jayakrishnan Ranjit
I am an architect with a passion for writing. Crafting design stories through a tilted writer’s prism.
“YaiSa is the symbol of love and waiting. She has been waiting for someone she loves who has left her to search for the ultimate truth and promised to return to her when he finds it. Every day, she stands at the same point waiting for him. What is the ultimate truth? And where is it? Is it extrinsic? Or is it already in our mind? What are love, mercy, change, death, emptiness, and oneness?”
- Artist Kamin Lertchaiprasert
When do we realise the meaning of our existence? Can we see the beauty and virtue of nature? Does a parallel world exist as an intermediate between the ultimate truth and the illusory world??
Artist Kamin Lertchaiprasert explores these other dimensions of life and mystery through his collaborative work with architect Suriya Umpansiriratana on an architectural timeless piece of art that blends into the frames of real and unreal. Kamin calls the structure ‘No Sunrise No Sunset’ because “The sun stays in the same place, but the world keeps spinning around it”. It is a life-specific project envisioned as part of the Thailand Biennale in 2018. It is an exploration of the parallel world, to create awareness between timelessness and non-attachment, in order to mould a conversation between inner and outer space; you and me.
Art & Architecture
Artist Kamin explores the relationship between and beyond life and truth, with the architectural dimension Ar. Suriya brings into the visceral landscapes of Krabi on the southern coast of Thailand. The sheer magnificent limestone cliffs, intertwined dense mangrove forests and offshore islands transcend the artistic design envisioned to captivate the visitors to take them beyond the unknown. They have designed a pavilion between the rocks and boulders through the masterful fusion of fine art and architecture.
Deriving their inspirations from the deep dark reminisce of the monstrous caves in Krabi. The pre-historic timeline added to the flavour of creating cave-like architecture breathes into the depths of primitive man.?
The Impression
A rectilinear hollow cuboid that sits halfway to the shore facing the Andaman Sea aligned and positioned according to the movement of the sun. At the end that faces the sea stands the fibreglass sculpture of the elderly YaiSa, the lady who is waiting for her partner to come back after his search for the ultimate truth. The entire structure is erected on four I-steel columns placed along half the area of base while the other half with cantilever juts out into the sea. The exterior facade is made of aluminium composite panels in a minimal contemporary fashion that showcases the existential life around the structure in enigmatic reflections.?
The structural framework is composed of fabricated steel frames of I, L and C sections that combine, braces and welds to contrive the entire form. The entrance is through a series of three concrete steps that lead to a rectangular off-centre pivoted door that swings open into the interiors of this beguiling pavilion. Precast concrete slab and reinforced concrete strike to paint the dark hall, quilting with a layer of waterscape midway on the floor from the sculpture. The interior ambience exudes a scintillating and ethereal effect on the context and the story. The inner surface planes act like a grey textured canvas that empowers the visitors, bestowing to the drama through art.?
‘As we move closer and closer towards the elderly woman, we become her partner who has returned after the journey in search of the ultimate,’ says Kamin.?
Changing perspectives in our life bring about beautiful thought-provoking insights, into embracing the way how things are within and around us, to expose ourselves and discover profound meanings that lie beyond the extent of nature. #JK
