ETAP Power Grid- The rating page. Rated KV, Generation Categories, Voltage Magnitude, Voltage Angle, Operating, etc.
I previously wrote an article on the ETAP power grid discussing the first page of the component power grid on ETAP. See this article here.
I am delving into the second page of the component editor called Rating.
First, let's discuss the basics of this interface.
The menu on the left side, those 9 callouts, are called pages. Therefore, the power grid page has 9 pages: Info, rating, short circuit, time domain, harmonic, reliability, energy price, remarks, and comments.
The page with the blue background tells you what page on the component editor you see. We are on the power grid editor's rating page (callout 2 in Figure 1).
Let’s talk about some significant field input on the info page.
Rated kV
See callout A in Figure 1.
kV stands for Kilo Volts. Rated kV is the rated voltage of the power grid in kilovolts. A few common mistakes I have seen are people not realizing the value is in kilovolts.
For example, if the power grid is 480V, you should type 0.48 instead of 480.
Gen. Cat.
See callout B in Figure 1
It is a shorter term for Generation Categories. You can see a list of names under Gen. Cat.: Design, normal, shutdown, emergency, etc. Those names are defaulted from the software and can be changed under settings.
You can see two columns, %V and V angle columns. Those are available options because the utility grid in this project is in Swing mode.
If you change mode, other columns may be available, depending on the grid voltage control, MVAR control, or power factor control modes.
%V
See callout C in Figure 1
The magnitude of the power grid voltage as a percentage of the power grid nominal kV

Vangle
See callout D in Figure 1
The angle of the power grid voltage is in degrees.
Operating
See callout E in Figure 1
The data on the operating section shows %V, Vangle, MW, and MVAR. Those data appear after you run load flow studies. You can also enter those data; the software will use them for calculations.
?
Now, let’s run some load flow and see the output.
1412 MW, 394.4 MVAR. The arrow is down. Hmm, what do all those numbers and the arrow mean?
We'll talk about it in the following article.
