Transient Analysis Program. 28 Electrical Study Modes- A description of 2 of them: Load Flow, Short Circuit, Arc Flash
Did you know that ETAP is an acronym? It stands for Electrical Transient Analysis Program. If you have never heard of ETAP, it is software for electrical power systems: generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial.
?ETAP is used for modeling, design, analysis, optimization, monitoring, control, and automation.
ETAP has 28 study modes. The default study mode toolbar is shown below if you open your software.
Not all 28 study modes will appear in the horizontal bar. To view all of them, you can click on add or remove, and a list of all the modes will appear, as shown in Figure 2.
Today, we will discuss two of them. We won't go into details in this article since upcoming articles will focus on each study mode in detail.
LOAD FLOW
The icon of the study mode is shown in Figure 3
While the term ' load flow study' is commonly used, I prefer' power flow study' as it more accurately reflects the dynamic nature of power in electrical systems, unlike the static nature of the load.
A load flow study aims to determine bus voltage values and whether the equipment is adequately rated for those voltages. It also calculates branch current flows and compares them with the equipment ratings.
?All equipment has voltage ratings; if the voltages are outside their specs, it could have catastrophic consequences.
I wrote a detailed article on load flow. See the link below.

SHORT CIRCUIT
Figure 4 shows the icon of this study mode.
The purpose of the short circuit is to calculate the maximum available fault duties to compare to low-voltage equipment short circuit ratings and Medium- to High-Voltage equipment interrupting ratings.
The other purpose is to calculate the maximum available peak fault duties and compare them to Low-Voltage equipment's unpublished peak ratings and Medium/High-Voltage equipment's closing and latching ratings.
ETAP analyzes the effect of three-phase, single-phase, line-to-line, line-to-line-to-ground, and line-to-ground faults on electrical power systems.
ETAP follows and complies with the following standards:
In the upcoming articles, we will go into detail in the short circuit mode.
