Estonian Ecosystem Showcase (to learn from)

Five years ago i spent some time in Singapore, a really small country, but which is a strong financial and technological force in Asia. As i studied their recent history, I became fascinated with how some small nations can really forge a solid future for themselves even while facing strong adversities. 

We have cases of small nations thinking ambitiously and courageously in Europe as well. In the startup ecosystem and digitalisation area, Estonia is one of them. 

With only one 1.3 million people, Estonia has impressive startup-related metrics:

• 1143 active startups
• 140 startup-support organisations
• €440M venture capital raised by startups in 2021

Estonia fares better than Romania which is approximately 15 times bigger in population, but with around 1200 startups, less than 100 startup-support organisations and with only a bit more than €30M in venture capital raised by startups in 202.

Moreover, some of Estonia’s country-wide measures are really meeting entrepreneurial needs, to name a few:

• Startup Visa e-Residency
• Tax declaration done in 5 minutes
• Starting a company in 20 minutes online 
• Government’s plan for a better tech architecture based on microservices

On Wednesday we’ll be having a full spotlight on the Estonian ecosystem showcase with aim to understand and learn what we can apply in Romania as part of the RoStartup project (Romanian Startup Ecosystem Strategy). Our guests will be:
