Estimator Profile: James Fenwick

Estimator Profile: James Fenwick

Our blog post about the role of an Estimator that we posted last week has created some conversation amongst us and has made it evident that we are not the only ones thinking that Estimation is a HOT job!! So, following on from this, we have been chatting to a couple of experts in the industry to get a real insight into their role, what skills are required, what do they enjoy most and how it has helped them get to where they are today.

If you are considering a career in Estimating, we hope this helps clear some things up for you... And as always, please feel free to reach out to us, or James if you have any further questions ??

What did your role as an Estimator involve?

There are so many different elements to the role as an Estimating Manager, but just to name a few…

  • Staying up to date with the latest available construction materials & methods to support current competitive construction pricing
  • Formulating project winning strategies to provide a competitive position & value add options
  • Providing market advice, including indicative square metre rates ($/m2 GFA & NLA) for various building types to inform developer’s feasibility studies
  • Compilation of elemental cost plans to underpin developer’s budgets
  • Pricing competitive tenders including fixed lump sum, design & construct & managing contractor formats
  • Understanding & pricing a project team’s safety & quality requirements
  • Forming good relationships with trade contractors & consultants to underpin the ultimate goal of competitive pricing

…Are you still awake??

What did you enjoy most about your role?

Like anything, I enjoy the thrill of the win & celebrating accordingly! Losing is inversely proportional as fun… I also can’t go past the subcontractor relationships and interaction with those in the industry. Working in a team environment and learning from construction veterans – Site Managers, Project Managers, Construction Managers etc – has definitely been an enjoyable aspect of my role as an Estimating Manager.

What do you think are the key skills that make a good Estimator?

  • Methodical, measured & calm approach to pricing projects
  • An eye for, and attention to detail
  • Good communication skills

How did Estimating help you move into a leadership role?

The importance of securing future projects places a high value on Estimators, and I guess this importance generates leadership positions. Also, an undersupply of Estimators creates less competition for those leadership positions.
