Esther Wojcicki on How to Raise Successful People: Remarkable News #10

With schools closed, we've made the switch to teaching our children at home. In the words of Shonda Rhimes, producer of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, after week one of educating at home, “Teachers deserve to make a billion dollars a year. Or a week.”
I recently hosted Esther Wojcicki on my Remarkable People podcast, and she shared many great ideas that she’s learned from thirty-six years of teaching and raising her family.
In case you don’t recognize her name, she is the “godmother of Silicon Valley” because her uber-successful daughters are Susan Wojcicki (YouTube’s CEO), Anne Wojcicki (23andMe founder and CEO), and Janet Wojcicki (UCSF doctor and researcher).
We can all learn something from her wisdom:
- There is an optimal, NON-ZERO amount of adversity that necessary for maturation.
- Helicopter, lawnmower, and snowplow parents are doing their kids a disservice.
- Standardized testing is full of flaws.
- The key ingredients of successful growth are TRICK: trust, respect, independence, collaboration, and kindness
