By enhancing connectivity, communities can empower residents to pursue their aspirations and achieve their goals.With the implementation of enhancements to the Appalachian Development Highway System (ADHS) supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation, new highways and upgraded road networks will offer individuals easier access to nearby cities, creating more employment prospects.The U.S. Department of Transportation is allocating over $1.2 billion for the Appalachian Development Highway System (ADHS) to aid in the timely completion of designated corridors across 11 states in the Appalachian region.Originating in 1965 due to the underserved nature of Appalachia by the interstate highway system, the ADHS comprises a network of 33 unique corridors totaling around 3,000 miles, linking the region to interstates and providing access to regional and national markets. This system spans 13 states, connecting New York to northern Mississippi. By 2040, it is expected that 100% of the network will be complete and open to traffic.The Federal Highway Administration collaborates closely with the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to promote innovation, partnerships, and investments aimed at building communities, boosting the economy, and enhancing socioeconomic conditions in Appalachia. The funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law serves as a catalyst for the Appalachian Development Highway System to better link businesses within the region to domestic and international markets. Moreover, it offers residents safe and reliable access to jobs, education, healthcare, social services, and recreation.The construction of the ADHS has stimulated economic activity throughout the region, leading to job creation and business expansion. Upon completion, the ADHS is projected to generate an additional 47,000 jobs and contribute $8.7 billion in goods and services.
