Establishing Marine Protected Areas on World Maritime Day
The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (Helsinki Commission – HELCOM) facilitated the meeting of the Marine Protected Areas Managers Network this week in Copenhagen. This Network includes State Representatives, NGO`s and Industry Representatives like CLIA to discuss the implementation and management of Marine Protected Areas.
The workshop, financed through the EU Protect Baltic Project, is bringing stakeholders together to share best practices in marine protection and negotiate project timelines and research methodologies to tackle biodiversity loss in the Baltic Sea.
The recent development by the European Union, focusing on Marine Protection through the Water Framework Directive, the Marine Spatial Planning, the Nature Restoration Law and the Marine Strategy Frame Directive, have all positively influenced the work performed by this group. ?
The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission, established in 1974, has been working together with Industry Stakeholders like CLIA in Europe on sustainability practices for almost 50 years
