Essentialism and Multipliers in the Age of Generative AI

In today’s fast-evolving work landscape, two of my favourite books continue to offer timeless insights on productivity and leadership: Greg McKeown 's Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less and Liz Wiseman 's Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter.? McKeown's book shares insights on how to focus on what truly matters by “doing less, but better,” Wiseman shows how leaders can amplify the capabilities of their teams by empowering others to contribute at their highest level.
Now, as generative AI becomes an integral part of our work, these concepts are highly relevant—they’re even being enhanced. AI is transforming our approach to both essentialism and multipliers by automating routine tasks, providing real-time insights, and creating space for human creativity. Our traditional ideas of focus, empowerment, and delegation are evolving into something far more dynamic.?
What this means for leaders
Leaders and contributors now have the opportunity to concentrate on strategic, high-impact tasks while leveraging AI to extend their reach, accelerate execution, and drive iterative improvements. With this shift, essentialism is redefined—it’s no longer about choosing between one task or another, human or AI, leader or team. Instead, it’s about optimally distributing execution where both human ingenuity and AI capabilities work in full synergy.
This evolution also reframes delegation. Traditionally, delegation centered on a leader assigning tasks to a team. Today, every professional must consider how to multiply their own impact. In this new paradigm, a single professional becomes a unified force—a collaboration of human expertise and AI support—capable of achieving far greater results together than either could alone.
My own journey
I’m not a perfect example of an essentialist. I’ve always enjoyed exploring multiple areas, embracing a wide range of responsibilities, and seeking various dimensions of impact. The idea of “doing less” never resonated with me—instead, I’ve focused on optimizing what I do to maximize impact and empower my teams and colleagues to excel.
The infusion of generative AI has been a catalyst for my evolution as a leader. With AI as an extension of my capabilities, I can seamlessly toggle between researching, analyzing, automating, and processing information. This not only frees me to focus on setting strategic direction, but also allows me even more to serve as a multiplier—amplifying the collective excellence and creativity of my team. In short, AI has transformed my approach from trying to do fewer things to doing it all, better.
