Essential Tips for Job Search Success
Welcome to The Standout!
After her kids went off to college, my sister-in-law decided to return to the workforce. She took a step back and realized her happiest moments were spent 1) helping people and 2) flying on planes. So she became a flight attendant!
There’s a lesson here: Job seekers get so caught up trying to be the perfect fit for some company that they forget what makes them happy.?
Here’s a thought experiment: Review your life and pick out moments when you felt truly good about yourself. Where were you? Who were you with? What were you doing??
These moments can guide you toward a job that you’ll not only enjoy but excel in. Because when you’re happy, you can’t help but succeed. ??

In today’s edition of The Standout, we offer the following five tips to help make your job search easier and faster:
Here’s the first tip…
? Don’t begin cover letters like this ??
Don’t begin cover letters with "I am writing to apply for the [job position] at [company name], as advertised on [place you found the listing].” This adds little value. Instead, begin with a key achievement, what excites you about the role, or how you can solve the company’s problems.
Next step: To learn more, read How to Write a Cover Letter That Gets You a Job Interview.
?? How to list multiple jobs within the same employer ??
When you’ve had multiple jobs with the same employer, you don’t have to list the employer all over again on your resume. Instead, list the employer once with the dates of your total employment, followed by each position with their respective dates. Here’s an example:

??? How to transition from military to civilian employment ???
If you're transitioning from military life to civilian employment, make sure to enroll in the federal government's invaluable Transition Assistance Program (TAP). TAP provides a three-day course designed to assist active-duty service members with resume writing and interview preparation.
Next step: To find TAP classes near you, click here.?
?? Join LinkedIn groups to expand your network ??
Consider joining LinkedIn groups that fit your industry or career goals. It’s a great way to connect with other professionals, keep up with the latest trends, and get tips that can boost your job search or career growth. Regularly post intelligent questions, and respond to thoughtful posts.?
Next step: To join LinkedIn groups, log in, click on “Groups,” select a group, and request to join. You may need to answer questions or get admin approval. Once accepted, you can start engaging with the group.
?? How to stand out in job interviews ??
Before a job interview, check out the company’s core values and think about how you’ve embodied at least one of those values in your current or past roles. Talking about this in your interview will make you stand out more than candidates who just say the company’s product is “cool.”
Next step: To find out about the company’s core values, check their “About Us” section or look for recent company news and updates. You can also explore their social media profiles.
