Essential Skills for Writing a Book

Essential Skills for Writing a Book

Welcome to another edition of Amrit's Writing Tips!

Today, I'm going to talk about what it takes to write a book as a ghostwriter—or even if you’re just trying to tackle your own writing project.

This isn’t just for ghostwriters; anyone wanting to capture their story can benefit from these insights.

Tip #1: Listen for the Voice, Write in the Tone

Writing a book isn’t just about getting the facts down.

It’s about capturing a voice.

Every person has a unique way of speaking.

Their voice reflects their personality.

A successful ghostwriter listens carefully to pick up on these nuances.

But even if you’re writing for yourself, this matters.

When drafting, read your work aloud.

Does it sound like you?

Are there words you’d never use in a conversation?

If it feels off, try simplifying the language.

Write like you talk—this keeps your voice genuine.

Quick Practice: Write a paragraph and read it aloud.

Does it sound like you?

If not, tweak it until it does.

Tip #2: Collaboration is Key

For ghostwriters, collaboration isn’t an option—it’s essential.

But even if you're writing your own book, think of it as collaborating with a future reader.

Are you clearly conveying what’s in your mind to someone who knows nothing about your story?

When writing for my clients, I constantly check in with the person I’m writing for.

You can do this with a friend or even yourself.

After writing a draft, step away and come back to it with fresh eyes.

Think, "Would my future reader understand this?"

If not, simplify or add context.

Why is collaboration useful even when you’re solo writing? It’s a way to ensure clarity.

Treat every draft as a conversation, not a lecture.

Tip #3: Balance Creativity with Your Message

There’s a line between being creative and staying true to the core message.

As a ghostwriter, I have to make sure creativity enhances—not overpowers—the message of the person I’m writing for.

You should think the same way about your own book.

Ask yourself, "Am I adding this part just because it sounds cool, or does it serve my story?"

Every creative detail must have a purpose.

It should make the message clearer or more impactful. Be bold, but keep your goals in sight.

Simple Exercise: Underline the most “creative” parts of your writing.

Then ask, does this add value or just fluff? If it’s the latter, time to cut.

Tip #4: Managing Your Writing Time

Book writing takes time.

You can’t rush it, but you also can’t let it drift without structure.

For long-form writing, break it down.

I use stages: outline, draft, revise.

This keeps projects manageable.

Start with an outline.

Even a simple bullet list can give you a roadmap.

Then, focus on one section at a time.

Don’t aim for perfection right away.

Draft it, then come back to make improvements.

Another thing that helps is setting short, consistent sessions rather than long marathons.

Write for 30 minutes every day rather than waiting for the perfect free weekend.

Tip in Practice: Set a timer for 30 minutes.

Pick one chapter or idea and just start.

The aim isn’t perfection—it’s progress.

The Big Takeaway: Writing with Purpose

Whether you're getting your book written by someone else or drafting your own book, the key is to write with purpose.

Know what you want to say, capture the true voice, and don’t get lost in unnecessary frills.

Time management and clear goals will keep your project moving forward.

For those interested, my job as a ghostwriter is exactly that—to keep your voice authentic, collaborate seamlessly, balance creativity, and manage time effectively so you can have your story told without lifting a finger.

But even if you're doing it on your own, these tips are here to guide you.
