Essential Safety Tips for Boating

As we prepare for a holiday weekend before entering into September and the Fall season, we are still enjoying nice breezes and water all around. There are still very hot days left to make the most of boating. Remembering to check the weather and verify your safety equipment is functional and onboard per your local regulations is key. But there are a few other safety tips to keep in mind. Boating in hot weather comes with its own set of challenges - and thinking ahead and being prepared is essential. Plus water temperatures can be steamy in late summer. Here are tips for staying safe and comfortable in the heat:

  1. Keep an eye on weather forecasts and heat advisories, and avoid boating during the hottest parts of the day if possible.
  2. Make sure your boat is equipped with plenty of water, ice, and shade before setting out.
  3. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
  4. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection, and regularly apply sunscreen with a high SPF. Reapply every two hours and after swimming.
  5. Take breaks in shaded areas of the boat to avoid prolonged sun exposure.
  6. Take a dip in the water (but always ensure the boat is anchored safely and someone is watching swimmers).
  7. Use portable fans or misters to create a cool breeze. Some World Cat boats offer air conditioning - enjoy that when needed!
  8. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  9. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, both of which can dehydrate you.
  10. Consume fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries.

It’s also important to know the signs of heat-related illness. Be aware of symptoms like dizziness, nausea, headache, excessive sweating, or confusion. If you or someone else experiences these, seek shade, hydrate, and cool down immediately. Regularly check on your boating companions—especially children and elderly individuals—to ensure everyone is staying cool and hydrated.
