Like rest of the world, India announced a slew of relief measures worth Rs 1.70 lakh crore last week, mainly focused on its poor, to fight the Covid-19 pandemic. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) supplemented the government’s efforts by unleashing measures to inject Rs 3.47 lakh crore to counter the impact of the virus on the economy. Together, the central bank and the government have committed a stimulus worth 4.3% of India’s GDP. Sectors such as tourism, airlines, hospitality, trade and transporters are suffering huge losses due to the pandemic. The financial markets have been butchered.
The economic recovery is expected to be slow and uneven after the health crisis is over, as most of the informal sector will not be able to re-start their businesses, the unemployment rate could hit its peak and experts suggest that the lock down could bring in behavioural changes in people and their consumption pattern also would change.
How it affects Manufacturing Sector ?
Capacity utilisation of various manufacturing plants will be a big issue when the demand slumps. As the overhead expenses will not be reduced, it will lead to increased manufacturing cost and affects bottom line. Manufacturing plants will be forced to reduce manufacturing cost to stay ahead in the market with lesser capacity utilisation or by lowering selling price.
How to reduce manufacturing cost ?
Understanding various cost optimisation opportunities is a must to implement a successful manufacturing cost reduction program. Some of the area like process optimization, rework reduction, production planning and capacity utilization etc could be managed by in house team members however core areas like Energy saving, Maintenance cost reduction, Engineering excellence requires professional support to achieve excellence. 5 -15% reduction in Energy & Maintenance cost could add significant value to your manufacturing cost optimization.
