Discover the benefits of apprenticeship programmes
With UK universities facing closures due to budget cuts and an increase in UK students exploring alternatives to higher education, what does this mean for the entry-level job market? A recent article by HR Grapevine highlighted the importance of apprenticeships for businesses looking to ‘be ahead of the curve when higher education institutions do start to close’.
Now more than ever, apprenticeships are hailed as the ultimate solution for tackling skills shortages. Just look at the pledges made during upcoming general election campaigns by both The Conservative Party and The Labour Party, promising a 'golden age' of apprenticeships and learning.
Apprenticeships are an excellent way to strengthen a business’ talent acquisition process, taking candidates with little to no experience and nurturing them with tailored training that addresses specific business needs.
Despite offering benefits such as improved staff retention rates as reported by 69% of businesses and an increase in productivity reported by 78%, many are still limiting the hiring process by asking for a higher education qualification.

Training an employee with no experience
Are there other ways to support employees without experience or qualifications? Absolutely. In fact, we recently shared an article that focuses on the best ways to nurture inexperienced employees using a talent management system.
A key point in the article focuses on creating a comprehensive training plan, first nailing the onboarding process, and then delivering continuous training and development opportunities throughout their employment. This training plan needs to be tailored to each employee, addressing any existing skills and knowledge, and identifying ways to close skills gaps.
Another tip is to encourage peer-to-peer knowledge sharing from experienced employees to those with no experience, using social learning tools in your talent management system to facilitate this. These social tools are also a good forum for new employees to ask questions in a safe space and lean on the support of experienced colleagues.

Strengthen your talent acquisition process with leadership development
Most business leaders know by now that to attract and retain top talent, they need to offer development opportunities that encourage new hires to grow and flourish in their new roles. This applies to all positions in the company, including those in leadership roles.
A recent article by Forbes highlighted the importance of extending executive coaching to senior leaders as soon as they join the company, allowing them to ‘make a more immediate impact on your business and be better prepared to lead change’.
So how do you create a leadership development strategy that supports the growth of even the most experienced leaders? Bring out the best in your leaders with an e-learning platform. With surveys, varied training content, 360 feedback tools, and comprehensive reporting technology, you can create a leadership programme that quickly gets new hires up to speed while arming them with essential skills and knowledge that will help them thrive in their new position and get the most out of their teams.

It’s time to invest in your employees with reskilling programmes
Looking at findings from the Global Workforce of the Future Report 2024, a recent article shared by HR News called attention to a statistic which found that 49% of UK workers want to change their careers. So how can businesses avoid losing these employees looking for change?
To retain top talent, now is the time to invest in reskilling programmes. By offering an opportunity to explore a new career path without leaving the company, employers can avoid losing talent and the costs associated with employee churn. And UK employees are on board with this, with 68% agreeing that companies should train, upskill and/or develop existing employees for different roles before hiring external candidates.
By incorporating reskilling programmes into your core L&D strategy, you can benefit from an agile workforce, ready to adapt to any changes and take on new responsibilities.
Be sure to include leadership skills training opportunities, allowing the 47% of UK workers who want to move into management to pursue their chosen career path without development-related obstacles standing in their way.
