Cybersecurity is a dynamic and challenging field that requires constant learning and adaptation. During my 25+ years of service in this field, I have seen many changes and developments in the industry and learned valuable lessons. I want to share some essential leadership skills necessary to progress in the cybersecurity industry. However, they’re probably generic enough to apply to most industries.
?
Self-awareness: This is the ability to recognise your strengths, weaknesses, emotions, and motivations. Self-awareness helps you to understand how you impact others, how you cope with stress, and how you learn from feedback. Self-awareness is the foundation of personal and professional growth, enabling you to identify areas of improvement and set realistic goals.?
To develop self-awareness, you must be honest with yourself, seek feedback from others, and reflect on your actions and outcomes.
??
Integrity: This is the quality of being honest, ethical, and trustworthy. Integrity is crucial for cybersecurity leaders, as they protect data and systems’ confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Integrity also helps you build trust and credibility with your team, stakeholders, and customers.?
To demonstrate integrity, you must follow your organisation’s ethical standards and policies, admit your mistakes, and act in your organisation’s and its mission’s best interest.
??
Communication: This is conveying information and ideas effectively and efficiently. Communication is vital for cybersecurity leaders, as they need to communicate complex technical concepts to different audiences, such as technical experts, executives, and end-users. Communication also helps you collaborate, influence decisions, and resolve conflicts.?
To improve your communication skills, you must know your audience, use clear and concise language, listen actively, and use appropriate channels and tools. This is the hardest for some to master, especially if you are introverted.
?
Adaptability: This is the ability to adjust to changing situations and environments. Adaptability is essential for cybersecurity leaders as they face new and evolving threats, technologies, regulations, and best practices. Adaptability also helps you to embrace change, learn new skills, and innovate solutions. You must be open-minded, curious, and flexible to enhance your adaptability.
You must also monitor the external and internal factors affecting your organisation and its security posture and respond as needed.

?
Risk management: This is the process of identifying, analysing, evaluating, and treating risks. Risk management is critical for cybersecurity leaders, as they must balance the risks and opportunities of using technology and make informed and strategic decisions. Risk management also helps you to align security with business objectives, prioritize security initiatives, and allocate resources effectively. To master risk management, you must comprehensively understand your organisation’s risk appetite, risk tolerance, and risk profile.?
You'll also need to use risk assessment frameworks and tools and communicate risk information to relevant stakeholders.
??
Passion: This is the feeling of enthusiasm and excitement for what you do. Passion is essential for cybersecurity leaders, as it drives you to pursue excellence, overcome challenges, and achieve your goals. Passion also helps inspire and motivate others, creating a positive and productive work environment. Besides, who wants to work in an industry you are not passionate about for the next 40+ years?
?To cultivate your passion, you need to find meaning and purpose in your work, seek opportunities for learning and growth, and celebrate your achievements and your team's.
??
Relationships: This is the skill of building and maintaining positive and productive connections with others. Relationships are vital for cybersecurity leaders, as they need to work with different groups, people, and third-party providers in today’s complex IT landscape. Relationships also help you leverage the diverse skills, perspectives, and experiences of others and create a culture of collaboration and trust.?
?To develop your relationship skills, you must respect and value others, communicate effectively, provide and receive feedback, and acknowledge and appreciate others’ contributions.
??
Optimistic outlook: This is the attitude of expecting positive outcomes and focusing on the bright side. An optimistic outlook benefits cybersecurity leaders, as it helps them cope with stress, overcome obstacles, and seize opportunities. An optimistic outlook also enables you to foster a positive and resilient team and create a culture of innovation and improvement. This is not always easy but is a good reminder not to worry about what hasn’t happened.
To adopt an optimistic outlook, you must recognise and challenge your negative thoughts, focus on the solutions rather than the problems, and celebrate the successes rather than dwell on the failures.

Looking back over the years, these leadership skills have probably helped me most in my career. I hope they will also help you advance your career and achieve your goals. I’d love to hear from others on any areas that have helped them.? Remember that leadership is not a destination but a continuous learning and improvement journey. I wish you all the best in your journey.
