Last week I felt self-conscious about the possibility of oversharing in talking about the constellation of Personas I've identified and dubbed "The Triplets." I've concluded that I am a "Recovering Traumainsta," meaning, as in the case of alcoholism, the goal is not to "fix" oneself and declare oneself recovered but to accept and embrace, monitor, and manage our subpersonalities. Although we can learn techniques and communication styles that acknowledge the effects of our childhood trauma, there will always be echoes of those experiences in our interactions with intimate partners and close friends.
The good news is we all have genuinely positive, attractive, healthy Personas assisting us in expressing our Essence Personality. Our Essence Personality, also known as our?Genius, is "an attendant spirit present from one's birth, innate ability or inclination."
This week I'm taking the risk of humble bragging. Years ago, I took a position as the?Director of Creative Services Project Manager?for a very small newspaper in a very small town. The title was super cool. Whatever that title meant, I was salivating at the notion that it sounded like meaningful work. I was going to help people grow their businesses.?
I was not the least bit disappointed to discover that the position was, in fact, a sales position. Exciting! And the creative part meant I had to invent the product before selling it.?
In short order, I became like the lead character in the blockbuster movie Sixth Sense, but instead of seeing dead people everywhere, I saw advertising opportunities everywhere.?
My Essence Personality is fundamentally curious and social, enjoys variety, and thrives on making something beautiful from nothing. I find people fascinating. I find persuading people to understand a point of view intoxicating. Doing all the above with humor floats my boat. Imagining possibilities and illustrating those ideas with a combination of words and graphics so that another human person could find the meaning I hoped to convey; hallelujah, let's motivate people.?
Oh, and did I mention I love to learn new things? Researching how to maximize the use of the client's advertising dollars felt like a beautiful challenge.?
The cherry on top of this sundae of joyous work arrived in the form of a contest. Do we get to do all this, compete with our name on the board, report our position daily and get bonuses for winning the competition? Get out of here! Game on!?
In the first contest, I was all over that board and put a massive gap between my sales number and the next person on the totem pole.?Managers came and went. Each new manager tried to mold me to their image and likeness. One manager in particular stopped by my desk, insisting that I return to the offices with contracts in hand that totaled a number that looked precisely like 3% more than last year's numbers by no later than the fifteenth of the month. With poise and grace, I had to convey that he couldn't expect that performance. When I handed in contracts totaling a 24% gain year over year, he just smiled and said, on the 21st of the month. Whatever you are doing, keep it up!?
When you are firing on all cylinders, using all your gifts, you are in your Essence personality; congratulations!?
