Espousing the past?

To bury its past
A nation needs to marry?
its present offspring.
Proud identity
wants to overlook old faults,
but trips over them.
We fear to believe
our honeymoon is over,
imagine it’s not.
Yesterday, today,
we ignore what’s not working,
fear domestic spats.
For our children’s sake,?
we claim to hide history,
but it’s for ourselves.
We must learn to live
with the spouse we've been given.
There is no other.
It’s hard to admit
that our heroes have clay feet –
glance down at our own!
Owning old fractures –
the first step in bone-setting.
Walk, despite the limp!
I cannot repair
my nation’s past, my own,
but I have today.

3 年I love this George. Indeed the nations with the biggest ego-driven, ‘glorious’ pasts seem to struggle most when confronted with the dark side of their past.
